[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
We were standing in a local gravel pit trying unsuccessfully to photograph Sand martins in flight, when this Red Kite flew over the edge.

He was just as surpised to see us as we were him but before he rose higher into the sky I managed to take a couple of shots against the light. The image required some PP work to adjust the levels but I posted this as I was quite pleased with the result.

As Red Kites are basically carrion eaters, it was presumably looking for a dead rabbit or even to catch a young rabbit that sometimes remain outside their warren while others have bolted into their holes.

Red Kites (Milvus milvus) are resident in Scania, the southermost province of Sweden where we live and they spread a little north to breed. Some overwinter in other parts of Europe. Swedish fledgelings were introduced into the UK to re-establish populations that had become extinct. Red Kites now flourish in many parts of the UK.

It is quite a large bird of prey, having a wingspan of about 1.5 meters (5 ft)

This was taken at a distance of about 15 meters and after slight cropping and size reduction it was adjusted for light levels and selectively sharpened.

Hi Ivan,

You should be pleased and glad you posted it, what an amazing looking bird, stunning colours, excellent detail, beautiful frozen action, love the light coming though the tail feathers, really nice work even if it was taken in a rush, all the best,

Cheers Rick :)

A good composed shot with great details, Ivan. I love the colours of this bird. It isn't easy to get a good shot of a bird in flight, but you have shot him really well. The different colours of his plumage and the patterns stand out wonderfully against the blue sky,

Hello Ivan, great in-flight capture of this Red Kite. Your focus and exposure on this shot is excellent providing very good sharp detail with great colour on the bird. You've composed it well with great screen filling placement of the bird on this blue sky background, while still leaving him room to move. Very nice PP.

Thanks, John

Hi Ivan,
needless to say that I envy you for this excellent shot. We have a couple of Red kites that circle since January every day over our house and you can imagine that I tried many shots, in vain. You caught it with perfect light from the side. It's a real beauty! Many thanks and best regards

Hi Ivan

It's really nice to look at your beautiful photos from your gallery again, my friend! It's been a while...
This is a gorgeous shot and i must congratulate you for it!
The conditions (against the light) and the speed that you had to react with were tough, but you still managed such an excellent close-up...BRAVO!
The colors and details are terrific and even if you had to adjust some light elements in the PP, you succeeded in getting terrific details from the shaded areas.
Wonderful work all around!

BRAVO and TFS
Horia

May not be the bird you were after but this is a wonderful capture of the Kite in flight. The searching eye is excellent. Beautiful wing positions with excellent details and colors. And a familiar looking blue sky.

Hi Ivan

Your post reminds me that I have to go to visit the RSPB site a few miles away where it is possible to see the reintroduced Red Kites.

Great POV and wonderful detail.

James

Surprise, surprise..and Ivan came away with the prize!
And with a 5 foot wingspan telephoto lens friendly :)

merhaba Ivan,
Kites are really very beautiful raptors and from my favourites among this group. But I see them rarely. Your capture great with focus, POV, composition. I hope I can take them such a great shot, in future. Thanks also for good information.

Dear Ivan,
You must be busy singing away in the choir celebrating your National day.I wish you and Ulla a great time.
I take the day and opportunity to critique a not so frequent kind of capture from you..an in-flight shot very welll presented in great skill....I like that eye that seems to be very keenly looking out for a prey or even perhaps a twig or two for its own nest...I have seen the eagles here do it...they swoop down in one big motion to carry away large twigs or any material they deem fit for their building works.Infact i have seen them at the traffic light when the cars stopped and since we were in the front row, i could see one right across on the road infront of cars picking up a large twig and swiftly flying away....the wings are impressive and that sunlight filtering through the tail end is quite attractive ...despite a hurried effort.. Very well done.
Thank you for sharing this..

Cheers

hello Ivan

i missed from you this great in-flight shot of the Red Kite,
WOW, iti is a excellent close in-flight shot, with a very fine POV,
the bird of pray from all is undersides, fine framing

TFS

Asbed

Nice shot. Beautiful colurs, and the eye is sharply focussed.

You have many excellent bird photos, Ivan, but this one takes the prize in my eyes... WOW! Thank you for your comments on my photos. Having someone with your eye and skill help improve my own picture taking is much appreciated. Crisp and clear, this Red Kite is. THANKS for sharing! -Kelly
