The Hornet Robberfly (Asilus crabroniformis)

It has caught and is feeding on a Staphylinid, or Rove Beetle, characterized by its short wing cases. While feeding it is relatively easy to approach as the Hornet Robberfly is protected from being attacked by bird by its appearance. Its size and the brown and yellow warning coloration that resembles a hornet wasp is enough to deter most predators.

But this large 2.5cm long (over 1 inch)Robberfly has become much rarer and is threatened by the medication of cattle because its larvae feed on other insect larvae that live in cattle dung. When cattle are treated with medicines to remove internal parasites, these medicines remain in their pats, which makes life impossible or difficult for the larvae of those insects that are dependent on feeding on cattle dung.

As this was taken on a nature reserve, the cattle grazing it are presumably not treated by such medicaments so that their cow-pats are reasonably full of life.

The problem of cattle medication has also led to deaths of vultures that feed on their carcasses in India, so that now several species of vulture are now nearly extinct.

It isn’t only the medication of cattle that causes environmental problems: our own medicines cannot be destroyed by sewage treatment and their effect on the environment of our lakes, rivers and seas has yet to be evaluated but we already know that contraceptive hormones are affecting the breeding capacity of many species of fish.

Indeed, our behavior regarding the release of medicines and thousands of chemicals into the environment is still very primitive.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters with the camera hand-held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

Hi Ivan,

Both notes and picture are extremely interesting. Lots of problems to be soloved in our world. I'm not sure if I have seen a Hornet Robberfly before. He looks rather menacing pictured here with his prey. Excellent shot, as always, with nice colors and immaculate details. Great timing to catch this action. Background is wonderful and I love the diagonal composition.

Hi Ivan,

Your photo is impressive! the DOF is so good that even very fine details of insect's body can be clearly seen. Also you have rendered so many color tones on the insects as well as in the background. The light is well used and the reflection in hornet's eye looks great.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Ivan,
A nice capture of this beautiful robber fly along with its prey. Yes the medications to cattle makes life impossible for these beauties. When I was a kid often returning from school I see a lot of vultures feeding upon carcases and I always thought when I will grow up and own a camera I will surely capture the beautiful scavengers. But alas my dream is still now a dream. Hope the vultures will return. Very well composed with sharp details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Ivan.
Very good and informative note and superb picture of a nice scene. I like wonderful diagonal composition of the image, details and sharpness of the predator and prey as well as the twig are amazing. Lights, exposure and colour palette are superb too. However, the key point of the picture is subject and brilliant POV. Bravo. Well done.

Hi Ivan!

Really big robber fly. I've not seen this specie in my life. Great side view with, razor sharp, full of details. I think spiky twig is very suitable for this kind of predator. Great macro.

På något sätt har jag tappat lust att vara aktiv på den här sidan, annars har massor med nya spännande bilder...

Hello Ivan!
What a capture! I always wanted to see this species of Asilidae in the wild! And I am still dreaming about it! (and of course about pgotograph it :>). Very interesting picture of rather rare (at least in my region) species. And also very good documentaryimage, as Staphylinidae beetles are not a common prey of this predatory flies.
If you agree I would like to add this unique photo to the theme "Robber flies of Europe" :>
All the best and thanks for showing this picture!
Friendly yours,
Radomir

Hi Ivan, my kinda shot :)
Very good detail, color, exposure, BG, POV, and diagonal comp.
Hard to believe their threatened status..
Leave it to mankind and he'll screw up the balance in nature every time.
Well done!
Howard

An interesting and informative capture with equally informative notes. Your image is nicely composed and the colours are vibrant. I like the way the simple background allows the subjects to clearly stand out. Awesome!
