Ladybird Fly (Gymnosoma rotundatum.)

Swedish name: Bärfisparasitfluga
The Swedish name means ‘parasite fly on stinkbugs’

This was taken on our Coriander flowers in the garden

It belongs to the parasite fly family Tachinidae. It is widespread in Europe up to S. Scandinavia but rarer in the north. Also found in SE England on flower-rich sandy soils. The larvae are parasitoids of Shieldbugs (Pentatomidae), the eggs being laid on the nymphs.

Hi Ivan,

Stunning shot of this Ladybird Fly, something I haven’t heard of before. The detail in the body and wings is excellent, wonderful colours to, and that narrow d.o.f has separated the subject from the OOF background perfectly, really nice work, t.f.s

Cheers Rick :)

Hello Ivan,
At first a wonderful composition, a very cute fly and very fine flowers. Very simple, but not so easy to make a good picture out of it.
I think that I saw these flies also in our alpine regions, if not the same, some related species.
Merci et une belle journée

Dear Ivan,
I like the excellent POV, sharpness & details of the subject. The lighting & composition for the ladybird fly are superb. TFS.

A lively capture in perfect 3-D effect Ivan, I always wonder how they manage to fly with such a plump body, but miracilously they do it! Imagine a similarly heavy bodied plane with again similar flimsy wings, it really would need the power of nature to get it off the ground! TFS this highly detailed image my friend.

Hi Ivan,

Hi Ivan,
thanks for your subtly tell the id of the green beetle.this one is really fascinating.
such a sharp and clear shot. the background is really effective. it seems as if the flowers are floating.
The composition is superbs with soft greenish background.
Really beautiful.

Good Morning Ivan,
Love the comp & POV, great colors/clarity.
Fine detail & well exposed.
Both flowers and fly stand out very well against the nicely blurred BG also..
Well done!

No doubt there are definitely two focal points here...the fly is the titled focal point but the flora are delicate and well coloured...I find it sometimes difficult to put two things in clear focus without one detracting...and here you seem to actually add to the photo rather than detract...but that is your good quality work Ivan.

Hi Ivan,

Nice macro sshot of this flower and the Ladybird fly.
Very good details with beautiful colours.

Hello Ivan,
What an incredibly well done macro image. Everything is splendid Ivan, the color, details, point of view and composition. Thank you for this excellent view into the small world.

Just now, I was going through Matatur's Theme Images and I came across this most beautiful picture of a Lady Bird Fly, Ivan. I missed it our in 2009 when you posted it. Still, it is a sheer pleasure to watch a macro image of this superior quality.
