Cinnabar Moth (Tyria jacobaeae)
Swedish name: Karminspinnare.

This moth has a wingspan of about 4cm. It is sparsely distributed in South of Sweden and its numbers vary greatly from year to year from being locally common to almost absent. If the weather conditions are right some drift over from the continent though it is not a specially powerful flyer.

It belongs to the Tiger moth family (Arctiidae) and is widely distributed in Europe and N. Asia where the habitat is right. It is day-flying from late may to July. The males are slightly larger.

The larval food consists of various species of the genus Senecio, especially S. jacobaea, or Ragwort, which is poisonous. The caterpillars are also therefore poisonous and are coloured with black and yellow stripes that are warning colours, though when they rest among the yellow flowers of Ragwort they can also appear surprisingly camouflaged.

The black and red colours of the adult also warn potential predators that they are poisonous.

A poor shot of one about to fly is shown in the WORKSHOP to show the rich red colour of the hindwings.

This was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of 1.8 meters (6 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened and adjusted for exposure.

Hi Ivan dostum, a fine macro capture of this colourful moth species. A novelty for me. i also captured some lovely moth species during our trips. But still i could not find their id yet. Hope soon!
TFS and have a nice new week,

Hi Ivan,
This is a pretty good capture of the Cinnbar moth at 1.8 metres.
Reds like this don't always 'appeal to the sensors' so the camera often has trouble focussing on them.
We don't have many moths quite this colourful here.
Nice capture.

Hello Ivan,
nice strong contrast between the well focused moth and the soft background.
Clearly, these colours have to tell us something as outlined by you.

Hi Ivan,

I have never seen a colorful moth like this before! Your notes are fascinating - I have just learned that moths can be poisonous! A wonderful pose showing off the strange red and gray wings and the lovely patterns. Good to see the opened wings in the workshop.

Bonjour Ivan,
Great shot of this colorful and special moth. Looking at the color, we could guess that it is not so good to digest..
I also have very rarely seen this species and never succeeded to make a convenient picture of it.

Hi Ivan,
Excellent close up.Well caught and composed.Colors,POV and BG are also wonderful.Have a great Week!
Thanks for posting..

Hello Ivan, Beautiful picture of this tiny moth. Good POV and composition. Colors are natural and beautiful. But looks a bit saturated. Shallow depth is nice. Only thing I think the tele-converter has degraded the sharpness a bit. The wings could've been in bit more sharp focus.

Hi Ivan,
A fine capture of this Cinnabar Moth.
Really nice colours and lighting.
Great composition as well.
I haven't seen any of these for a while, I think there numbers are falling quite a lot here, which is really sad because they're such lovely moths.

Very well done on such a great shot!

Hello Ivan !
This moth is so beautiul, I have never seen this species, I love the red markings on black wings. And you have captured it so nicely. Sharpness, composition, POV, pose of the moth, colors, everything is excellent. Very well done !

An interesting and hard to photo set of colours...perhaps as hard as the American Robin..not the European...Very nice work for such a hard subject. It has a stealth look to it!
