Large SkipperOchlodes sylvanus

I would like to start thanking everyone for all the kind critiques you've given me on my posts since I returned here after a break. I'm most grateful and am pleased to see that so many old friends are still here too!

Today I thought this image would serve as a nice contrast to my macro of the ‘Pink Elephant’. Even though this Skipper is named ‘Large’ it is pretty small with a wingspan of about 26-34 mm. I was rather surprised to find this one settled on a large seed clock of a Goatsbeard (Tragopogon pratensis) as it is normally seen seeking nectar on flowers and is quite common here. Goatsbeard is common in southern Sweden. It has yellow flowers that only open for a brief period in the morning and the seed clock is considerable larger than that of a Dandelion.

Both (skipper/goatsbeard) are vying for attention here and you have won. Excellent image, very contrasting one. Fine soft lighting has helped the image looks very pleasing. tfs.

This one has a tickly feeling to it...It gives me goosebumps looking at it..seriously...I wonder how the autonomic nervous system works like this in some people...I also experience feelings in shots taken from height and precarious positions..

Hi Ulla
Ha Ha Funny and beautiful. Great photo. Your image is sharp, with perfect exposure and nice POV. There is a little noise in background

Hola Sra. Ulla.
Ud. tiene una foto muy hermosa aqui. Muy artistica y con mucho merito, pues la Palomilla luce exelentemente en esta fina flor, y le da un valor agregado a esta imagen.
La nota es muy buena y agradable.

Hi Ulla. This is somthing a bit different. As you say a unusual place for the Large Skpper to land i suppose it made a soft bed. You have taken Both the flower head and the butterfly with fine detail and your use of the light has given bright colours. Well done TFS.

Hi Ulla, really fantastic! The sharpness of this pic is another time the thing that i like a lot.Impressives the details of the seed clock and of the skipper too,a very professional work! My best compliments, have a nice day,LUCIANO

Enhorabuena Ulla por los bellos trabajos que últimamente nos estás presentando, donde la nota de arte del conjunto potencia el documento en sí.
Un abrazo: Josep Ignasi.

Hi Ulla,
Very elegant composition, but what on earth was a Skipper doing on that seed head? Not drinking, that's for sure. By way of nomenclature, I think sylvanus is now considered an invalid homonym of venatus, even though the French colloquial name is 'le Sylvain'. Thanks for a delightful image.

Hi Ulla,
such a beautiful composition. The sharpness of the skipper and the beard is so wonderful. Well seen in its shines and pattern.
Lovely contrast of the brown and silky subject.
A nicely presented view of the subjects.

Hi Ulla,

Great photo.
Beautiful colours with great details.
Light,focus and shrpness are splendid.
Good note.

Dear Ulla,
This is a very interesting photo of a Dandelion, proving the old saying "Nature got there first"

Distribution is essential to the continuance of plant species, and nowhere has evolution shown more ingenuity.

Dandelion parachutes provide more subtle services than a random distribution of seed. The plant has an in-built barometer, ensuring seeds are released on a dry, warm day - and on a steady rather than gusting breeze, so that they will be scattered as far as possible. (Like the chutes of paratroops, designed to deliver their burdens gently and in upright stance.)

Your presentation is special, because you show a full head with the seeds ready to go when condition is right..

The pastel background emphasises the lightnes of the seeds and good focus and control of depth of field show all details.

Have a nice week-end
Best Wishes
