Carrion Beetle (Oiceoptoma thoracica )

Swedish name: Rödsköldad asbagge, meaning, ’red shielded carrion beetle’

Here is a species rarely shown on TN.

.It belongs to a worldwide family of Carrion or burying Beetles, Silphidae. These are beetles that feed on decaying animal or vegetable matter, as well as on insects that are found in the same habitat of organic decay.

This is a species that is about 15 mm (0.6 in) long. It is the only species of its genus and is widespread and not uncommon in most of Europe and Sweden.

Though usually found on carrion it can also occur on decaying fungi and flowers with the kind of smell that attracts it.
It is a predator, feeding on small insects and insect larvae like fly maggots. Its own larvae feed mainly on maggots that devour carrion.

We were taking our little dog for a walk in a local forest when I saw this beetle on the flowers of an Umbelliferous plant.
As I had only my compact with me I tried a few shots with and this is one of the results.
The irregularities and texture of the thorax and elytra make it look like it is OOF. Checking other shots taken from a dorsal POV seems to confirm this.

This was taken at a distance of about 40 cm (16 in). The image was slightly cropped and after size reduction it was selectively sharpened.

Hi Ivan, this is truly new for me and very interesting. The pic isn't your best, the focus is perfect on the flower but not on the beetle, good composition and natural colors. Thanks for share, have a nice week! Luciano

Missed being your neighbour on the gallery by one space, Ivan.
It is decidedly a rare Beetle and I have definitely seen it for the first time. Unique but absolutely attractive colours on its thorax and abdomen. The POV from the top shows all its features very clearly.
Thanks for sharing this suberb macro of a rare species of Beetles.

Hi Ivan,

Lovely shot of this "Carrion Beetle"
Great composition, POV, colors and sharpness
TFS this rare spiecies

Ciao Ivan. Bit focus problems but very good colours and contrast. Wondeful light throught the flower to obtain so intrigant graphic effects.

This looks like jewel box has opened, Ivan!
An outstanding shot!
I am speechless!

mostly in dirty objects, very good colours and good details
i have also found this one but with good sharpness

Hallo Ivan
This is so beautiful it actually looks unreal in a way, almost like make believe. A most colourful and striking macro with which I cannot find any fault. The details captured are superb, the composition and point of view just right and the additionals like the pretty petite flowers and the water droplets that covers the beetle a pleasant bonus. The shape of the antennas is fascinating and pleasant to look at. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Very interesting image of the flowers and the beetle which I have seen but did not know the details, thanks for that, the situation is good even for a compact camera, well done. tfs.

Sort of like aphids on dill eh? That's where I find them up here....times elsewhere, where the ants are:-)

Besides being a good photographer, as shown here, you are like a walking talking, living Audubon. did you know that Audubon shot his birds dead before he drew their images. True story..

Hej Dostum Ivan,

This capture couldn't be better, very elegant beetle indeed.
Fantastic composition with this one, the sharpness seems impeccable too.
The shallow DOF was a good choice too MF!
TFSW and have a nice night!

Hello Ivan,
beautiful image with sharpness and background excellent. A nice picture. Regards, Paolo

günaydın Ivan dostum
this is very interesting, bt very beautiful beetle, with reddish and dark green colors. In first looking, I thought it was a Lampyridae. May be I have seen a Silphidae member for first time. you greatly captured it on flowery umbelliferous. great focus, light using and POV/DOF. nicely composed and presented with good informative notes.
çok teşekkürler dostum. eline sağlık. iyi günler.

Hi Ivan,
I love the velvety texture and bronze colour on this beetle.
You're right, it does create something of an illusin of fuzziness.
Lovely composition on this wild carrot like plant.
TFS this rare image,

Hi Ivan,

Bonjour Ivan,
Meilleures salutations

Hello Ivan
very great image, you have captured this nice beetle in a superb environment, fine POV and pin sharp details, excellent coloration
i love the whole composition
Have a good night

Hola Ivan

Hello Ivan

Excellent macro of this species of Beetle
shot with your good and old Canon PowerShot G9,
fine POV, beautiful light, great focus,
sharpness, and details, TFS
