Purple Bar Moth (Cosmorhoe ocellata )

Swedish name: Ögonfläckad fältmätare, meaning, ‘eye-markt field geometer’

I think this species of Geometer moth is shown for the first time on TN.

It belongs to a worldwide large family of Looper Caterpillar Moths, or Geometridae. The word ‘geometer’ means ‘measurer of the earth’

This species is widespread and fairly common in Europe. It is nocturnal and flies during the summer months and is easily attracted to light. Its larval host plants are various species of Galium.
This one was found in our garden.

Though it contrasts vividly with the leaf that it is on, it looks superficially like a bird dropping, which can lead to predatory birds avoiding it. The raised abdominal tip helps to create this illusion.

This was taken with my compact hand held at a distance of about 40 cm (16 in).
The image was slightly cropped and after size reduction it was selectively sharpened, though I am aware that hand-held at 1/60 sec is not the best speed for sharpness. The early morning light gives one little choice though and I prefer to avoid using flash.

Hello Ivan, my friend,
Hope you'll be doing fine. I think being busy I am not doing justice to my neighbours either. However, here I am to comment on your wonderful photo and must admit taking such shots is always difficult and a slight misjudgment or delay can leave one with many regrets. This appears to be quite tiny but lovely. Thanks a lot for sharing a marvellous photo and I do hope once more that you and your family will be doing fine...take care...warmest regards/Abid

Hello Ivan,
The natural colours in this photo look very nice, but in my opnion I have to say that the Purple Bar Moth is missing its 100% sharpness. The composition, DOF and POV are excellent.

Nice work with your compact Ivan, I've seen a very similar moth here.
We have a high number of smaller moths like this one throughout the Summer..
Nice colors and good detail, like the way it contrasts with the leaf it's perched on.
Have a great weekend!

Hello Ivan..Lovely catch with gooddetails...Perfect angle and nice colors...TFS.

hello Ivan
beautiful picture with nice pose and good details of this beauty
greeting lou

Fine capture of this very interesting Moth, Ivan.
The sharply etched green leaf makes an apt contrasting BG for the shot.
The colour tones are just right to give a vivid impression of the beauty of this subject.
Thanks and regards.

Ciao Ivan. Bit sharp problems MF but best compliments the rare capture.

Hi Ivan,
Beautiful capture of this interesting moth.Exposure, details and natural colors are wonderful.Excellent work!
Thanks for sharing..

The baby G9 is incredible pocket camera I know Ivan! I personally always caring my new G11 whenever I go! A bit of a camera shake is obvious in this shot, but I am sure you are aware of this. Other than that I think this is an important presentation of the specie. Thanks for sharing!

Firsts are always an important learning tool for some of us. Your notes are superior this time Ivan. You give the beast some background which is its best quality.

Purple Bar Moth is another new species on TN. congratulations. it looks very beautiful with banded wings. you nicely captured it from dorsal POV. nicely focused and composed. coloration and light using also nice. çok teşekkürler dostum. iyi geceler.

Hello Ivan friend,
I think Ulla handles better the Canon G9! ... ha ha ha :) ... I think the 1/60s output a bit blurred image. But either way, the picture retains attributes to show details of the moth. Good work, is a very interesting species. Their wings have deliciously complex colors and shapes.
Have a nice Sunday MF
Regards an TFS

This is like using a microscope for a photo!
The effort is commendable!
Cheers, Ivan!

Hello Ivan,
this purple bar is definitely very interesting. the way it stays on the leaf and the way the stripes it was created, The top view capture displays a very contrasting colour combination and the superb details of its features is easily recognised.
I like th texture of both- the leaf and the moth.
Excellent piece of capture to be appreciated.

Congratulations on the first showing on TN, Ivan. This moth has unique design on the wings and you have captured very well in the frame. Excellent details with fine shallow DoF in this composition. Well done and best regards ' Jusni
