False Deathcap - Amanita citrina

“This mushroom has a fleshy pale yellow, or sometimes white, cap from 4–10 cm (1.5–4 in) across, covered in irregular patches. The gills and flesh are white. There is a large volva at the base of the 6–8 cm (2.5–3 in) tall stem, which has a clear ring. This mushroom is not eaten, having a smell of rapeseed or potato. It is often confused with the related death cap mushroom (Amanita phalloides), hence the name.” (Extract from Wikipedia)

This is a fungus common in deciduous forests in the south of Sweden, less common up north.

I captured this from a distance of ½ metre with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Dear Ulla!

Many thanks for this beautiful and seasonal picture. I like its simplicity very much and the composition with the lichen and the brown leaves adds to the value of the picture. I also have read your notes with great interest.

Kind regards

Hello Ulla
very nice close-up of False Deathcap with lichens on dried leaves. white balance, sharp focus and POV/DOF great. natural colors also superb. nicely composed and noted with good information. thanks for sharing, have a nice evening.
best regards

Hi Ulla,

Good-looking image of citromgalóca (Hungarian name of the species), beautiful compositioon, exposure and colors. Probably you focused on the ring, because it's sharp like a razorblade, while the closer edge of the cap seems a very little out of focus. Otherwise at least 9 out of 10.

An interesting fact: although many books mention Amanita citrina is a toxic species, it isn't toxic after cooking. The agent, bufotenine (the same as frogs used to have) disappears through the cooking / baking procedure. In spite of all these, I myself never tried its edibility.

Best regards, László

Hello Ulla
yes, now is mushroom time, wonderful autumn scenery with dried leaves in the BG, green lichen in the foreground and this very beautiful white fungi as highlight, and all with excellent sharpness
Thanks a lot for sharing
Have a good night

Hello Ulla,
Your capture of this mushroom is superb with fantastic focus and exposure with the Ulla touch for macro work. Thank you for sharing this beauty.

I wonder how I end up missing your shots, Ulla!
This is a stunning shot of this mushroom!
It looks like its come from a cake shop!
Very well seen, my dear friend!

Bien captada la elegancia de esta Amanita. Buen trabajo con
la luz y la paleta de colores. La f algo más cerrada quizá
hubiera mejorado aún más si cabe la escena. Buen documento.

Buena semana Ulla: Josep Ignasi.
