Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata)
Swedish name: Gråflugsnappare, which means ‘grey flycatcher’.

The English name refers possibly to the striations on the throat and breast but more likely to the buff spots that juveniles have on the back.

This species, like all flycatchers, arrive in Europe in the spring from the tropics to breed while there are insects about. The Spotted Flycatcher overwinters in tropical Africa and arrives in Sweden in May. It has become less common in recent years, probably because there are not so many insects.

It builds its nest on sheltered and hidden ledges found in old trees, buildings, trellises and sometimes rocky places.

After a relatively long dry period the garden bird bath was popular. On the same day that I photographed the rare Red-breasted Flycatcher, this Spotted Flycatcher came to drink and bathe. Here it is waiting to come to bath while perched on a strange-shaped piece of basalt that we have in our rock garden.

Another image of this species taken by the bird bath shows it from a lateral POV in the WORKSHOP. The BG is too busy to have it as the main image.

This was taken at a distance of about 6 meters (20 ft) from my hide set up in the garden. After moderate cropping and size reduction it was sharpened somewhat.

Hi Ivan,
Presentation and composition,
Great ..!
Very beautiful photo in excellent sharpness an perfect details and nice blurred background.
Best wishes,

Hi Ivan,
Nice picture of this little bird, waiting for his bath. The blurred purple flowers are a very nice, colourful detail. I like the perspective you chose, it really feels like this bird can dive into his bath any moment.
Kind regards,

Hi Ivan.
What a rich and attractive subject. Impressive stones, charming birdy, nicely blurred VF with flowers create an amazing scene. Main objects (bird on stones) are isolated from BG perfectly. Despite the sunlight absence colours are fine in their delicateness and beautifulness. Bravo. Perfect job.

Hälsningar Ivan,

Dear Ivan!

Ypu present us a very beautiful picture of this cute little bird. I like its pose and the place where it is sitting on is original, changing from the usual branches. The coloured spots of the background add a joyful touch to the picture. Your notes are instructive and interesting to read.

Kind regards

Hej Ivan,
a very fine picture of the grå flugsnappare, I think this is a young bird since strips on breast are a bit soft.
The bird is in good focus and DOF, stand out well from the nice blurred BG.
Well done.

I don't understand this number of rating in a so short time. If the picture were special or great ok, but not. I'm sure if it were one of your first picture you'd have maximum 10 points.

When i see this kind of behaviour, i remember why i stopped sending picture on this site.

ARGUS it's not against you but against the way the people use the rating system and they automatically give points to people who normaly give good picture (as you) but not always.

Fantastic capture of this gorgeous little bird Ivan! Nicely controlled exposition, lovely moderate sharpness and colors!

Hello Ivan,
All three images of this little one are superb, my personal favourite is the one after it's bath. All have Ivan quality, with wonderful camera work throughout. Have a great week Ivan.

Ciao Ivan, lovely bird in nice standing pose, beautiful blurry BG, fine details and splendid sharpness, very well done my friend, ciao Silvio

Hi Ivan dostum!

Stunning capture of this lovely flycatcher (Sinekkapan) taken from a fine vantage point with excellent details and lovely posture on an interesting shaped stone. The shallow DOF has created a wonderful soft background bokeh, which isolates the beauty well.
TFS and have a nice night!

Hello Ivan,
This fine and cute bird is presented in a very natural way with this well composed picture. Very nice to have included the funny-shaped stone and in a blured manner the surroundings. The attitude of the flycatcher is touching, I like this species very much.
Un grand merci

Bonjour Ivan,
Belle publication valorisant bien le sujet, sous une excellente profondeur de champ, par l'appréciation de la finesse des détails et de la délicatesse des couleurs.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.

Hello Ivan,
this is a real view. The pose and the nature of the bird is definitely cptivating. The small rock perched upon is so special making me think of the stonehenge.
The bird is well definesd and the blurry background isso smooth and vey helpful in giving the emphasis on the bird's feature and details.
What a work here!

Hola Ivan

Tambien una bonita imagen y composición con esas flores lilas difuminadas que realzan la imagen. perfecta nitidez y contrastes. Tambien un buen POV.

Un saludo de Antonio

Hi Ivan.
The perch on the rock is unique and the flycatcher is sitting pretty from the front view. You have focused the shot brilliantly with the beak and eyes tack sharp. At f/9, the DoF is beautifully shallowed and that must have been some factor with the converter, I guess.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice day.
