Bohemian Waxwing (Bombycilla garrulus)
Swedish name: Sidensvans, which means ‘silk-tail’.

The English name refers to the red-tipped wing tertiary feathers that look like red wax.

As I was driving home from a short trip I saw a large flock of at least 100 waxwings feeding on Rowan berries. It was in the middle of a heavy rain-shower and it was very windy.
I had to slow down to avoid running over them as they fed on the berries that had blown on to the road. When I came home the sun came out again and I suggested to Ulla that we could try to take some shots of them.

They were still there and we took a lot of shots from the car. This is one of my best ones

Bohemian Waxwings nest in the far north of Europe and America and overwinter further south to feed mainly on fruit and berries. Usually they are not that rare and can sometimes appear in flocks of up to a hundred in the autumn and early winter. In Sweden they are especially fond of Rowan berries (Sorbus aucuparia) that are common. In other parts of N. Europe they may feed on Hawthorn (Crataegus sp,) berries

Another image of this species was taken by the road verge showing them feeding on berries that had dropped to the ground is shown in the WORKSHOP. The BG is too busy to have it as the main image.

This was taken at a distance of about 6 meters (20 ft) from the car. After moderate cropping and size reduction it was sharpened somewhat.

Wow, this is splendid, Ivan.
What a fantastic photo. Everything in this photo is really amazing. The second bird gives a perfect DOF. One of the most beautiful photos of a Bohemian Waxwing I´ve ever seen. A new jewel for TN.

Hi Ivan - when I first saw this I thought that it was a shame that you got th esecond bird in th ebackground, but actually having opened it up I have changed my mind. I like the second bird and you have to look closely to check if it a reflection or the first bird or not. I think it works - well done - Phil

Hi Ivan,
Excellent photo of this beutiful bird, rare visitor by us, TFS!

Hello
Fantastic shot, interesting set focus.
Regards
Lucja

Gorgeous shot filled with briliant pastel natural colors Ivan. The dept of field is great and the second bird in the background looks like a reflection in a water which obviously is not. In my opinion the sharpness here is a bit to moderate for my taste. Good interesting notes as well! Bravo!
Regards,
George Veltchev

Hello Ivan,
Shoted from your car?... Just awesome friend!... Really impressive picture, with interesting POV and masterly managed DOF (the bird in background is like a "mirror" of the foreground bird!).... Nice effect, and very interesting note!

PS: 100 point for this colors, I like a lot the colors here!

Regards, TFS and happy WE for you and Ulla.

Jesús

Hi Ivan
I have not yet had the opportunity to see this species with their eyes. And that is why I find it interesting and "exotic." A great picture, with both birds busy feeding and seemed indifferent that someone is shooting them.

Kind regrads,
Oana

Bonjour Ivan,

Hej dostum Ivan,

Awesme capture of this beautiful bird, nicely positioned in the frame with flawless details.
TFS and have a nice night/weekend!
Cheers,

Bayram

lovely image of a most beautiful bird.

We usually get these around February in the UK depending on how hard a winter it is in northern Europe.

One from your top drawer...this reminds me now of Mario Belanger who did some of the best shots like this...and yours is of equal if not better quality. Simply super!
Bob

Bonjour Ivan,
D'abord un grand merci de ton aide! Tu es vraiment d'une grande serviabilité et gentillesse.
You have been very lucky to have seen so many of these beautiful birds and I suppose that Ulla made some shots too. Very pleasant double presentation of the birds feeding on Sorbus berries. Amazing how the second bird is almost like the shadow of the first. Fine and pleasant shot. I'm waiting that they will come down south to have the chance once to see them. Last year they were here, unfortunataly I missed them.
Bonne fin de semaine à vous deux
Anne

Qué delicadeza, qué maravilla, qué suavidad en los colores y que bien
combinados que estan. Un gran documento y obra de arte Ivan.
Abrazo.

Hello Ivan, excellent shot of these beautiful birds. I saw them firstly. Sharpness, details and colours are great.

Jacqueline

Hi Ivan. This is one fine looking bird and you have managed very good details in this shot. Beautiful reflection and pleasing natural tone. Excellent work with your favorite setup in presenting this well defined composition. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful Sunday. Best regards - Jusni.

hello Ivan

very very beautiful photo of the Bohemian Waxwing,
shot with superb POV, DOF and framing, great focus
sharpness and details, beautiful catch-light, for the
photo of the WS i prefer to see them perched on trees
than to see them in the ground, TFS

Asbed

Very nice Ivan, I think the second OOF waxwing brings a lot to the image.
You know, I haven't seen a one Cedar Waxwing this year, don't know why.
Years past we've had multiple flocks passing through here..
I especially like the colors & details I see, and the neutral gray BG works well here :)

hello Ivan,
very good capture with good details and beautiful colours.TFS

Hello Ivan,
this is a classical shot again. It gives me a thought on Chinese painting.
Indeed a very clean shot of the birds and the berries. The branches gives a good artistic view and the red berries gives a pleasant contrast. Mostly, the two birds mirrored each other very well.
Excellent presentation and it is such a rare ocassion to see this image.
congratulations!

Regards,
Foozi

merhaba Ivan
nowadays I have been in field again in southernmost coast of Turkiye. I found now this awesome capture of my dream species, Bohemian Waxwing. it is very beautiful with colorful plumage and crista on head. sharp focus, POV and eyes contact wonderful as like coloration and light using. rare one gives a richness to the shot, with its blurry appearance. workshop shot is also very nice. thanks for sharing these beauties.
ellerine sağlık. iyi geceler dostum.

Hello Ivan,
an eye-catchingly beautiful capture in pleasantly subdued contrasting colours, composed with perfectly elegant tension. Superb portrait of that lively species that always seems to come in flocks. My congratulations. Thank you!
