Sárcodon squamosus

This is a species that was earlier seen as a variation of Sárcodon imbricatus but is now regarded as a separate species. It is a fungus that grows on sandy or chalky soil in pine woods, where it sometimes forms large fairy rings. The underside bears soft, pale grey 'teeth' rather than gills. These are 0.5–1 cm long and brittle.

When young it is edible and has a mild taste. Old mushrooms, which contain blue-green pigments, are used for dyeing wool. It produces blue/green colours.

The generic name is derived from the Ancient Greek stems sarco- 'flesh' and odon 'tooth'.

The Swedish name is “Motaggsvamp”.

This was captured with the camera handheld from a distance of about 1 metre.

Hola Ulla,
anoche quise votarte pero ya no tenía puntos para dar jeje. Me gustó esta fotografía,
especialmente las ricas, abundantes y variadas texturas del fondo en combinación con
los del hongo. Interesante disposición en el plano de este. La luz casui al límite,
aunque controlada. Un bello documento.
Saludos y buen fin de semana: Josep Ignasi.

Hello Ulla,
A most beautiful and interesting fungi-shot. Amazing the patterns of the caps of these lovely "Motaggsvamp" (cute name) and eye-catching the fine colors of the surrounding lichen . Very well composed in a kind of diagonal manner. Bravo!
Have a nice weekend
Anne

Nice composition.

Hi Ulla,

No question this is a fantastic photo. Excellent exposure, colors, sharpness, lights, details and what counts the most, composition. A bombastic shot, very nice visual impact. About the question of edibility you talked to Gert about, I have to say this is the difference between a mycophile ("fungi lover") nation like Swedes and a mycophobe ("fungi hater") one like Dutch. On "hater" I of course mean collecting the wildly distributed edible species. Picking fruitbodies of common species will not destroy the funga of the given area or even nature itself, so I feel it's sometimes overreacted by a few people. Like for example the mycophobe Hollanders don't understand why the mycophile Polish guest workers used to collect fungi in the Dutch forest just the way they do it at home. This is simply difference of gastronomical cultures - some people like to eat wild fungi, because it's a part of their culture, while some others don't.

About the species: it's only living in areas where spruce (Picea abies), the only tree species Sarcodon squamosus is accepting as ectomycorrhizal partner, is wildly distributed, so no surprise it wasn't detected in my home country, Hungary. This is the 1st time I see it even on photo. So, dear Ulla, thank you so much for showing / teaching me something new this evening with your exceptional image and useful note.

Have a great weekend, friendly regards, László
