Great Tit - Parus major

Great Tits are regular visitors to our garden and tend to occupy the nest boxes in the pine forest surrounding us. They’re woodland birds that have adapted to man-made habitats like parks and gardens and are easily attracted to the bird table. They tend to stick together in flocks with other small birds that roam around for food.

As we have lots of snow here and temperatures dropped to -23 centigrades this morning, the birds appeared rather late to queue up at the feeding table. They have their definite meal times; breakfast, lunch and today they turned up before dark (4 pm here!!) for their supper and were frantically feeding before returning to their hiding places for the night. Perhaps they huddle together in a nest box or spend the night in our Thuja hedge. Somehow they seem to survive the cold as long as it isn’t too severe for too long.

Many small birds tend to migrate from the north to the south of Sweden in winter time as the climate usually is much milder here. But now that we have the coldest winter for 150 years one wonders how they’ll all survive.

It is a widespread and common species throughout Europe, the Middle East, Central and Northern Asia, and parts of North Africa in any sort of woodland.

This was captured through the window with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

This could be a photo from my garden. Between a lot of snow the tits are searching for food. Great photo in beautiful colours and excellent sharpness. Very pleasing composition. The DOF with this BG is gorgeous.

Well, I need to commend you for this shot dear Ulla! The image is not amongst the sharpest or the most detailed, but somehow its gorgeous simplicity is very appealing to me at least. After all the image was taken with a compact camera! Great point of view and lovely depth of field.The little Great Tit is well isolated from the background. Fine natural colors and impeccable composition! Thanks for sharing and thanks for the warm Christmas wishes!

The Great Tit must have been perched close outside the window to give you such a vivid and large image of this otherwise small bird. Other than that possibility, you handle your little gizmo with tremendous dexterity. When I went for an SX120 recently, I was thinking mainly of the great work you do with it. However, I'm all thumbs with it yet and have done nothing better than shooting my school kids rehearsing for their annual cultural show and that too in auto mode!
There is a typical winter ambience to this picture and that does not include merely the blob of snow on the branch of the tree. It is a very pleasing composition, indeed.

I cannot imagine how cold -23 is, I've been in -10 and that was pretty cold; I will stay here where it is temperate :)

Greeting Ulla, I love your photo here. You've got excellent detail and color. Snow sure can bring the birds out. The background is very interesting with the white and black and it blends with the bird here very well.

I struggle with bird photograhy. I have my feeders out, but have yet to get any good shots this season.
