Greylag Goose - Anser anser

Last Sunday was a beautiful sunny day and we took a trip down south. In one place along the coast we managed to approach a couple of Greylag Geese that seemed to enjoy the sun and the bare ground as much as we did. One of them was resting among the dry grass (see WORKSHOP) while the other one was busy grazing and ignoring us as we got close. There was still ice along the shore but out in the open water there were plenty of geese and ducks.

The plumage of the Greylag Goose is greyish-brown, with a darker head and paler belly with variable black spots. Its plumage is patterned by the pale fringes of its feathers. It has a white line bordering its upper flanks. Its coverts are lightly coloured, contrasting with its darker flight feathers.

Greylag Geese breed in Sweden where some stay over winter here in the south while the majority migrate after hatching and spend the winter in northern Europe. Already in February or March they return and tend to stay close to water where they spend the night and are safe from predators.

The Greylag Goose is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

This was captured from a distance of 8 metres with the camera handheld. It's been cropped slightly and sharpened.

Hello Ulla !
This one looks a lot like our big fat domestic Goose, but I have never seen any one of them in the wild, you are sooo lucky ! You managed to capture excellent details on the bird's face and plumage. I also like the composition, showing nothing but grass around the Goose. Nice natural colors, beautiful light. Very well done !
Valérie.

A fine low-key image of the goose from a good, low POV Ulla, the foraging bird looks so good within its natural environment. Perfect details and a pleasant eye-glint make this a nice capture indeed!

Hello Ulla,
simple shot of this goose. well seen with the stripes and pattern of its smooth feathers. The view is very pleasant as the details and sharpness is well composed.
i like the downward pose of the long neck. When we were children, the goose chased with this low head positioning.
quite interesting to note that in Malay Language - it is called "angsa"
Exciting view.

Redards,
Foozi

Hello Ulla,

The feeding goose is a great capture, and I imagine she is actually keeping an eye on the photographer..!
Excellent details in the plumage, and the fine light renders strong vivid colours...
Good close-up of the bird!
