As we have had, and continue to have for the next few days, dull dark weather, I am posting an image taken in the early summer.

Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Boloria selene

Swedish name: Brunfläckig pärlemorfjäril, meaning, 'brown-spotted fritillary'. In Swedish all fritiilary butterflies are known as 'pärlemorfjäril', meaning 'mother-of-pearl butterfly'

This is a common species of fritillary to be found in flowery meadows in most of Europe up to the arctic tundra.

Notice that it stands on four legs, instead of six that all insects have. The front pair are held up and modified to function as hairy palps. All Nymphalid and Satyrid butterflies walk on four legs with the front legs used as palps, which is why they are called 'brush-footed butterflies'.

The large dark brown spot in the centre of the underside of the hind wing, as shown here, distinguishes this species from other species of fritillaries.

Like other fritillaries, the larval host plants are species of Viola.
It flies in June and July

This shot was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters using a cheap tripod in cloudy conditions. After slight cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened, adjusted for shading and converted from RAW to JPEG.

Hello Ivan,
Wow, what a fantastic sharp detailed photo of this butterfly. The colours are splendid in great clarity. The Dof is really perfect. Very pleasing diagonal composition.

Ciao Ivan, great macro of lovely Boloria selene on a beautiful blurry BG, fantastic details, splendid sharpness and wonderful natural colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

The green fern and the butterfly colours complement each other beautifully. Perfectly detailed with good light.
A very bright and lovely photo.
regards yiannis

Truly impressive capture Ivan ...glad to see your work again! Hope you are well! Here, I love the pleasant natural set up with superb simplicity and fantastic use of your telephoto lens. The relatively closed aperture of f/11 did a great job. The Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary butterfly seems perfectly exposed. In my opinion the white balance in this image shows heavy yellow cast which I feel does not do much favor to the natural colors! Hope you like my workshop Ivan, although the result is not really very convincing. After all this is a small image already converted to JPEG!
