The local news reported this species of Australian Parrot flying in the wild since last spring close to where I now live.

Eastern Rosella , Platycerus eximius

Swedish name: Praktrosella, meaning, 'splendid rosella'.

This rosella has very likely escaped from captivity. It has survived so far thanks to the mild winter and to local bird-feeders.

In the wild it is normally found along the whole of the East coast of Australia, as well as Tasmania. It has been introduced into New Zealand.

I found it by first hearing it calling about 5 meters up in an oak tree, where this photo was taken.
It makes bell-like piping calls.

The dark clouded conditions made the winter lighting very poor. The WORKSHOP shows the original image that I had to brighten up using Photoshop 8. After it flew into another tree to preen itself I took another shot showing the back.

This shot was taken at a distance of about 12 meters in cloudy dark conditions. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened, adjusted for shading and converted from RAW to JPEG.

Hallo Ivan
No that is an interesting question, but I am sure this Eastern Rosella will survive; at least I hope so because it is such a colourful bird. I am astounded on how animals or birds, to mention only two types survive in harsh conditions whether it being cold or hot temperatures, and extreme conditions. Thanks for sharing this image from a viewpoint not regularly seen. Best regards.
Anna

Hello Ivan,
A contrast of bright colors in this dull colors season. Also my new knowledge that Parrots are able to adjust themselves to survive winter climate. TFS this special picture.

Hello Ivan,
What an interesting set of circumstances led up to your unusual photo. I surely hope this beautiful bird will survive your winter, but I suppose it will depend on how harsh the weather gets.
We have had an extremely mild winter so far with hardly any snow at all. Hopefully you will experiance a mild winter as well for the birds sake.

Hi Ivan.
What a surprise. You have met and pictured so rare guest in Europe in winter especially. I hope and wish it that it will manage to wintering. Despite the shooting distance and light conditions picture gives a complete idea about the species, season and surroundings. TFS and kind regards.
Alexei.
