This Noctuid moth came to light and could be photographed the next morning. A new species for TN.

Epilecta linogrisea , A Noctuid species of moth

Swedish name: Grċvattrat bandfly, meaning, 'grey-patterned banded noctuid'.

This species of Noctuid moth is nocturnal but we had the luck to see it during the day after being attracted to light. It occurs in S. Sweden and C. to S. Europe and flies from July to October.

The Larval host plants are varied and include Senecio, Rumex and Primula

There are several species of Noctuid moth that have camouflage colours on the forewings that are closed when they rest, but the hind wings are yellow or red with a broad black band. This combination serves as warning colours when the moth is disturbed and opens its wings to warn the potential predator.

Here this one is resting ona stone that camouflages it but I disturbed it enough for it to show a little of the warning-coloured hind wing.
This shot was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters in the morning lighting with the camera and long lens supported by a tripod. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened, adjusted for shading and converted from RAW to JPEG.

Hello Ivan!
What a wonderful camouflage! What a amazing exemple of the wisdom of nature!I love it! TFS
Nice w-end!

PS: thanks for visiting my gallery!I appreciated it!

As you know dear friend Ivan I am less biologist, a bit more nature lover and wholeheartedly photographer (well at least I am trying to be) , so all of this just to tell you where I am steering my judgement in my comments. Good camouflage indeed let me start in backwards. Even the discrete display of this yellow colors does not reveal the presence of the moth. Nature at its best ...as they say! Unfortunately however I feel that the 300mm + is not the ideal tool for this kind of images. This is not a critique Ivan ..just an observation. The sharpness ...he he he ..the sharpness, seems fine but the resolution of the image seems quite weak, and that's normal for most lenses of that caliber. Thank you for sharing Ivan, regards and keep well!

Hi Ivan,it's always a great satisfaction a first time, and this is a beautiful moth too,not easy to find a colorfull specie like that in our countries! Magnificent capture whit the best sharpness and brightness, not easy on this background.Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano.

Hello Ivan

Congratulations for this new species on TN,
and if you didn't do a close-up photo, if you
leaved the moth small on that environment
it would be a great camouflaged photo, TFS

Achhh. Now I have to get my conversion app out again. Meters to inches or feet or some such, but it is clear enough to be at that smaller distance and you're quite right about th cammo. Tres cool Ivan. Hope this small crit finds u better tham me. Recovery from Guillain Barre is tedious and long...

Splendid macro shot, Ivan!
Great sharpness and beautiful shades of colours; perfet POV and light; very well done!

Eres observador Ivan. Interesante trabajo, lo digo por el tipo
se fondo que que usa la polilla para enmascararse, pero que
tambin hace difícil su plasmación ya que cuesta encontrar el punto de enfoque
y luego además no es agradable a la vista :-)
Excelente trabajo.

Bonjour Ivan,
An interesting posting and a new species of moth for TN. I never have seen this one, but one with red color on the hindwings. Very well camouflaged on the stony ground. A great thank you to for your precious indications for my last shot. I should have thought about it, we have the same distinction in German (Rabe-Krähe).
