[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Though this species of toad is usually nocturnal, I was lucky to see this juvenile at the edge of a sandy-bottomed pond in a local nature reserve.

Natterjack , (Epidalea (Bufo) calamita

Swedish name: 'Strandpadda', meaning 'shore toad'

This species of toad is found throughout Western Europe. In the British Isles it is only found in the coastal areas. It is red-listed in Sweden and the UK, where the populations have been declining.

This is a juvenile that was only 3 cm long. Adults are normally 8cm long.

The natterjack has short legs which it uses to walk, run or make short hops when alarmed. When alarmed it can also sometimes emit a foul smell, which gave rise to the alternative Swedish name, 'stinkpadda'.

Like all species of toads its lays its eggs in strings, the Natterjack in shallow pools from April till June. It is mainly nocturnal and during the breeding season the males join a chorus of croaks that can sometimes be heard from a several kilometres away.

The WORKSHOP gives another view.

This shot was taken at a distance of about 2 with the camera supported on a tripod. After slight cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened, adjusted for shading and converted from RAW to JPEG.

Hello Ivan,
thanks for your comment in my previous post. Thanks for confirming the idntity too. As a layman and too amatuer in bird, it is so difficult to identify the bird correctly.
This toad is so well shown with the patterns and pimples so sharp. Nice daigonal composition too.
Exciting view of this shore toad which I never hear nor seen.
