Soon this species will come back to Scandinavia and when it does it is regarded a sign of Spring!

White Wagtail, Motacilla alba alba

Swedish name: 'Sädesärla', meaning 'seed wagtail', which possibly refers to the usual time of arrival when spring seed is sown.

The White Wagtail was one of the many species originally described by Linnaeus and it still bears its original name of Motacilla alba. The Latin genus name originally meant "little mover", but certain medieval writers thought it meant "wag-tail", giving rise to a new Latin word 'cilla' for "tail". The specific epithet 'alba' is Latin for "white". (Wikipedia)

The White Wagtail is the nominate subspecies alba of the several subspecies of Motacilla alba. It is a permanent resident in Western Europe and a summer visitor to Central and Northern Europe, spending the winter in N. Africa. In the UK a resident subspecies yarellii is known as the Pied Wagtail.

It is the most common wagtail in Europe.

Here it is looking for insects round a shallow pond in an old sand quarry.

In Sweden they usually arrive during the first week in April, but in recent years they started to arrive in the middle of March.

This shot was taken at a distance of about 6 meters (20ft) with the camera hand-held. After slight cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened, adjusted for shading and converted from RAW to JPEG.

Hallo Ivan
What a super image you have here and I say so for many reasons. This is the 1st time for me to see this beautiful White Wagtail, and what a beauty it is. Further to that your image is very sharp, the composition great and the close point of view very pleasant. The sunlight in the image is gorgeous and the catchlight in the bird's eye great, and so I can go on and on and then there is a great note as well. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hi Ivan, warm sun and good weather in my country, the springtime is back and as you tell maybe will coming soon too in your,a beautiful pic of this little wagtail taken in the best light and at the top of quality as usual.Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano.

Wagtails occasionally visit my school campus, Ivan.
This is a cute looking species you photographed last summer. The black and white head and the plumage are well captured in this picture.
I will also look up my archives to find out if I have a passable Wagtail picture to post here.
Warm regards.

Hello Ivan,
From your notes it seems that this little bird has the same job as our American Robin, to announce that spring is just around the corner.
You managed to capture this little fellow in an attractive low POV. The detail is nicely shown and the colors are very beautiful. TFS.

Hello Ivan,
Lovely eye-level shot. The White Wagtail is well in focus and the bright sunlight is perfectly under control. Very well done and tfs.

Beautiful photo Ivan! Very good composition, fantastic colours and great sharpness. Yesterday I saw a lot of them.

Nice sunday!

Hallo Ivan,
a very beautiful capture of the White Wagtail, superb sharpness and brilliant colours, very nice composition with a classic pose of this species on the ground
Have a good Sunday
Ciao Maurizio

lovely capture of this Sädesärla, Ivan ....what a sounding name...I mean the Swedish name of the bird! Good day! Love the point of view chosen here...lovely crop and gorgeous formative almost square frame. The combination of your 300mm f/4L lens and the 1.4 converter seems to work pretty well. I personally feel that the over saturated colors can be suppressed slightly...just doesn't feel convincingly natural Ivan, however all the members here seems happy with that issue, so maybe just me! beautiful capture anywhere, Ivan!

impressive close up, with great colors performance!

Lovely, Ivan!

For us the wagtail is aways a sign of autumn...

Hello Ivan,

Hope you are doing fine. I have come to this late but this is one hell of an elegant photo of this species. It is a common winter visitor here in Pakistan and I love this bird. I have often seen it fighting its own reflection in the window panes at my home. Its a gay mischievous bird. You have photographed perfectly, focus, sharpness, colours, plumage and all. Thanks a lot for sharing this and your notes, you are the master, an envied expert of bird knowledge and I am all praise, sir.
Thanks also for your comments to my below average photos, Ivan.
take care.....warmest regards/Abid

Bonjour Ivan,
Very pleasing picture of the White Wagtail, a bird which I find very difficult to photograph. Always in movement and away at the slightest movement. Obviously this one stood still for a moment. Love the natural surroundings of the shot too. Well chosen square framing.
Spring is here too, already 14-17°. What a rapid change!
Amitiés, à Ulla aussi

Hi Ivan, I see this bird every day in spring and summer days, I find very beautiful bird, your picture is reach in details and colors, very good perspective and light, congratulations !

ciao, tino

Hi, Ivan
I cannot add much to what has already been said - this is just a lovely shot, and as for "cool it George" - yes, it's just him! The yellow colours of moss sporangia on a summer sandy heathland work just fine for me ;-)
Very best wishes, Nigel.

Hi Ivan.
It is neighbor in my countryside garden. I like the species so much and often shoot them. However, I have not such nice shots as your till now. Details of the charming bird are reproduced greatly. I also like modest and also nice surroundings. POV and composition are spot on. My compliments and warm greetings.

Hello Ivan,
I've missed this beauty during my holiday.
Excellent photo of this White Wagtail in superb sharpnes, details and splendid natural colours. Great diagonal composition.

Hi Ivan,
Beautifully composed image with razor-sharp details. I personally don't feel the colors oversaturated, or at least not too much. A delightful image which presents the spring - I hope it arrives with lots of rain, because momentarily temperature's spring-like here but no rains at all. Thanks for sharing your beautiful shot.
Friendly regards, László
