Tinder, or Hoof Fungus, Fomes fomentarius

Swedish name: Fnösketicka, meaning ’tinder bracket fungus'.

This species of bracket fungus grows on deciduous trees, mainly birch and beech. It starts to grow on an injured or dead part of the trunk and can continue to grow long after the tree is dead.
It grows to form growth rings the lowest being the most recent. Older specimens look like horses hooves and can be over 30 years old.

When dried it can be used as tinder to start a fire and has been used for this purpose since the Stone Age.

It is widespread throughout Europe and Asia.

(My son and I visited a Nature reserve known for a few pairs of the rare White-backed Woodpecker. Efforts are being made to save it from extinction in Sweden. Unfortunately we only heard the woodpecker but I took this shot of the Tinder Fungus in the same reserve.)

This was taken with my long lens hand-held at a distance of about 6 meters (20 ft). Here it is growing on a dying birch.

The lighting was low, which made me use ISO 800.
After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was slightly sharpened using the unsharp mask mode and converted from RAW to JPEG.

It looks like part of the tree matching colors of the trunk which has all these lichens, good one and bit more saturation will help..tfs.

Hello Ivan,
I wasn't on Tn enough long time. I'm glad to see You still. I think in your country also still cold weather so as in my countryside in north of Poland.
Your photo like me. It's very familiar view.

Hello Ivan.
This is a great find of the lone fungus clinging on that bark. The details are fabulous and the shallow focus is pleasing. The artistic approach is stunning.
Thanks and kind regards.

Hi Ivan.
You have found a nice specimen of fungi on a very pictorial trunk. I have read a note with great interest. I meet fungi very seldom and have only few shots of them. Yours is very suitable for North European winter season. Cold colours and lights are very impressive. As usual your lane produces wonderful bokeh. Warm regards and TFS.
P.S. Today we had first warm day in the year.

Hi Ivan,
Probably I'm alone with my opinion, but I have to tell it: this is not your best shot. I don't know why it didn't work, I've seen many quality photos of you taken from this distance, with this lens - but now focus seems a bit soft and the background's very strange (probably you used the blur tool or cloned out some destructions). Just my opinion only.
Have a great Easter, friendly regards, László
