Insects in flight-19 :
A nice discovery here: this Sand Wasp (Ammophila pubescens, Sandwespe. Sphecidae) has a particular way of flying. It's long legs are stabilisers, the abdomen a balancer, the wings are moving horizontally forth and back. Good for precision landings and grabbing an unsuspecting geometrid caterpillar.
Technicals: it has again been shot with the 600 mm eq. tele lens, 1/4'000 sec and serial shots. Manual focussing, no flash. |

A pin sharp in-flight capture of the Wasp, Dietrich.
What is amazing is that you are doing it with a compact camera.

Hi Dietrich,
I know it's extremely difficult to photograph flying insects. I never managed to do it at all, so I can't advise how to do better and stuff like that. I can only say my personal opinion after looking at the photo. Probably I'm looking at another image than Luciano and Ram did, as instead of "pin sharp" subject I detect heavy oversharpening on the insect's body, as clearly seen from the increased noise level and the thin bright halo around the antennae and the head. Background noise shows the original photo was overcropped also. I hope you don't mind I told what I've seen.
However, I'm very much interested in your "flying insects" series as it's something unique, not at all the everyday kind of photography, in spite of this image is not being good IMHO.
