[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Tiny house guests.

This is a Silverfish (Insecta; Zygentoma; Lepismatidae; Lepisma saccharina; Silberfischchen), 11 mm in size and lightning-fast. You might all of you have some in your house wherever in the world you are. But you will only see them at night, for instance when you surprise them in the kitchen or bathroom by turning on the light.

ID: 4 species of the 425 worldwide Zygentoma occur in my region, two of them exclusively living inside houses. Interesting: they are primary wingless insects, palaeontologically old. This does not mean that they are "primitive", just the trait "wingless" is so. As a matter of fact, the scales covering the whole body are as elaborated as any insect scale (see the purple diffraction pattern on the back) and the copulatory behaviour is very complex.

Technical specs: ISO 400, 1/125 sec; f/18; inside the house, on a black plastic surface; macro twin flash with dispersers; monopod. Post processing: PS, removing plastic edge by stamping, the usual cropping, sharpening, resizing, resharpening.

Ciao Dietrich,

Anne

Egads! They are ugly. they are bad enough when I find them in my books munching, worse looking this big! Thanks for the shot! Great job!!!

Peter
