On my Valais excursions:

On our common excursion with Anne (anel), Peter (batu) on the Moosalp (see "Map"; 2'075 m a.s.l.) we found this interesting butterfly , a Large Blue male (Lepidoptera; Lycaenidae; Maculinea arion obscura; Schwarzfleckiger Ameisenbläuling), sitting on Nardus strictus. If my ID is correct (mmhm) , this animal depends for its existence on the food plant Thymus and on an ant, Myrmica sp. for reproduction. The ants bring the larvae to their nests, feed them and keep them through the winter!

T. Tolman & R. Lewington 1997. Collins Butterfly Guide of Britain and Europe. HarperCollins Publ. London UK..

The shot was taken with a Sony double flash as was the picture mounted before. But this time I had taken more care to direct the light of one flash by hand. In that way the background is illuminated and the animal develops no stark shadows. I had to repair the tip and a small hole of the right wings with "stamp" in PS, I hope you don't mind.

Lieber Dieter,
Anne

Hello Dietrich,

Another fine insect portrait from you! You've managed to find an angle that shows both the top and underside wing markings, not easily done. Nice soft light and subtle color make for an attractive image.

Very nice!

John
