On the Moosalp (2'040 m a.s.l.) again together with Anne (anel) and Peter (batu):

This male Grisons fritillary (Lepidoptera; Nymphalidae; Mellicta varia Meyer-Dür 1851; Graubündner Scheckenfalter) caught my eye.

ID: many thanks to Anne who pointed out the correct species to me and sending a picture of the underwings taken of the same individual! The caveats to ID: There are two similar looking species reported for the region at the "Centre suisse de cartographie" (www.cscf.ch/): Mellicta deione berisalii, whose wing pattern would well match the picture but which occurs only in valleys. The third candidate, Mellicta athalia is darker. Peter had posted a picture on TN of M. varia from another place two years ago.

The interest for this species lies again in its quite restricted range in the central and Southern Alps (and a few pockets in the Appeninnes), quite in contrast to M. athalia whose range extends from all of Europe right to Japan!

Ja, dieser Schmetterling gibt's auch in meinem Archiv. Wie Du glaub ich auch nicht, dass es M. athalia ist. Ich hab Dir per e-mail ein Bild der Unterseite geschickt, kann Dir vielleicht weiterhelfen. Warum nicht eventuell M. deione, ich hatte aber an M.varia gedacht.
