Roter Apollo, Apollofalter

Family: Papilionidae
Genus: Parnassius
Wingspan: 60-88mm

The Latin name PARNASSIUS APOLLO originates from Mount Parnassus sacred to Apollo and home of the Muses in Greek mythology.

The red eyes "ocelli" are use as warning from the toxicity of the butterfly.
The size of P. apollo depends of the altitude and the foodplants. The higher, the smaller they are.

I had the chance to see this specimen flying from flower to flower on my alpine meadow, so I could take some shots of this impressive butterfly. The light-conditions were a little bit harsh, however.

Bonjour Anne,
An Apollo in May!
Ours emerge in July!
This is a superb capture of a male in the open wing pose while feeding.
The technical standard is excellent and the composition pleasing against the contrasting OOF natural green BG.
