[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The previous two pictures (see Decisiom making and The made decision) have acquainted you with the young fox which attention was involved with someone's traces and-or smells. Now I can admit, that it were traces of a hedgehog and mine.

Only twenty minutes before, passing this footpath the first time, I had seen a hedgehog that crossed the road to a direction of bushes. I had immediately followed it. (It must be admitted, this meeting was the first for me. In a habitat, I never met hedgehogs earlier.) The hedgehog did not begin to escape from me, and rolled itself up into a ball. When I had come nearer to it, it began to hum threateningly. I was not frightened and in very adverse conditions had made few enough inexpressive pictures. I have posted one of them as a WS. In an original picture, the moment when the hedgehog had dared to look around is represented. It had put out a head and had looked to my side. I did not begin to disturb it more. The hedgehog had calmed down and had returned to grounds of bushes. Right to that side the fox looked and sniffed at a place of our meeting.

A hedgehog is any of the small spiny mammals of the subfamily Erinaceinae and the order Erinaceomorpha. There are 16 species of hedgehog in five genera, found through parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and New Zealand. There are no hedgehogs native to Australia, and no living species native to North America; those in New Zealand are introduced. Hedgehogs have changed little over the last 15 million years. Like many of the first mammals they have adapted to a nocturnal, insectivorous way of life. The name 'hedgehog' came into use around the year 1450, derived from the Middle English 'heyghoge', from 'heyg', 'hegge' = hedge, because it frequents hedgerows, and 'hoge', 'hogge' = hog, from its piglike snout. Other folk names include 'urchin', 'hedgepig' and 'furze-pig'.

Hedgehogs are easily distinguished by their spines, which are hollow hairs made stiff with keratin. Their spines are not poisonous or barbed and, unlike the quills of a porcupine, cannot easily be removed from the animal. However, spines normally come out when a hedgehog sheds baby spines and replaces them with adult spines around the first year. When under extreme stress or during sickness, a hedgehog will lose spines.

Hedgehogs are most closely related to gymnures. A defense that all species of hedgehogs possess is the ability to roll into a tight ball, causing all of the spines to point outwards. However, its effectiveness depends on the number of spines, and since some of the desert hedgehogs evolved to carry less weight, they are much more likely to try to run away and sometimes even attack the intruder, trying to ram into the intruder with its spines, leaving rolling as a last resort. This results in a different number of predators for different species: while forest hedgehogs have relatively few, primarily birds (especially owls) and ferrets, smaller species like the Long-eared Hedgehog are preyed on by foxes, wolves and mongooses.

An urban hedgehog out foraging at night. All hedgehogs are primarily nocturnal, although different species can be more or less likely to come out in the daytime. The hedgehog sleeps for a large portion of the daytime either under cover of bush or grass or rock or in a hole in the ground. Again, different species can have slightly different habits, but in general hedgehogs dig out dens for shelter. All wild hedgehogs can hibernate, although not all do; hibernation depends on temperature, abundance of food and species.

Hello Alexei,
I like this close capture of a Hedgehog not only for its sharpness and detail, but also for how the flash reflects from the eye to produce a certain sparkle, giving the hedgehog a kind of alertness. I assume the red-eye aspect of the programme helped you tp achieve this, but it is very effective.
Well done and thanks,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Aleksiej,
Your hedgehog is great with glance at camera.
I've often met hedgehog when grow dark but recently I've met in midday.
Best wishes, Pawel

Hi Alexei,
What an encounter!
I like the close approach you had under the circumstances.
Its amazing the way the tiny hairs on the head gradually becomes that spines.
You did it great with the fill flash used, to get this clear details.
Congratulations for the post and thanks for share it.
My best regards,

Hello Alexei,
First of all, many thanks for liking my butterfly picture and writing so many kind words on it, my friend.
This is the first picture of a porcupine-like Hedgehog I have seen on TN and it is as impressive a documentation of nature as the rest of your work of high calibre.
The portrait brings out all the features of this creature very effectively. I like the abstract symmetry of the quills on its upper body.
Thanks for sharing this great image and warmest regards.

Hello Alexei,
What marvellous captures of this hedgehog! We had one of them nesting in our previous garden and it produced three little very cute ones that used to come out and sunbathe on the lawn. I really like this close-up showing its cheeky little face with the pointed nose very sharply. The spikes are shown very well here too. Excellent work and a good note. I'm glad you had the chance to meet this little fellow!
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Alexei,
Great to have so many wild life around your summer house. This is wonderful shot. Those spikes are amazing to me. Very nice picture and pleasant to view. TFS,

Oh... I think this is the first time I see this animal Alexei. It looks like a porcupine form what I know of them in picture because I never had the chance to see one in real! This is a very good capture with great use of flash that brings out great details on its spikes but also in its eye. I must say that this day seems to have been your lucky day for pictures! Well done with very interesting notes. Thanks,

Hi Alexei,
Wonderful shot of this Hedgehog in its natural habitat (you are lucky to see one) and you have captured a fine rolled up pose. Immaculate sharpness and details on its spines and its eyes says that it is in a state of fright. Excellent POV and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Dear Alexei,
enjoying very much the way you take us out into your gardens, and show us your intense encounters with wild animals around you. This portrait of a hedgehog is very lively and charming. Can see that neighbour of yours move, hear it breathe and grumble.
Thank you my dear friend. Hope you are well and relaxed after those long weeks of summer in the steppe.
My best regards,

Hi Alexei. A fine clear close up of the hedgehog. We had these running around home years ago and it is good to see one again through your lens after so many years. Good presentation. Murray.
