[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
We have unusually cold spring. Despite the freaks of nature I did not miss an opportunity to visit our garden in seldom warm and sunny days and to take actually first close-ups this year. Few species of bugs were my shooting objects. Having a nice close-up flash kit (Nikon R1), 2x teleconverter and bright sunlight I had all for extreme macro shooting.

I plan to share two different pictures. This one is taken at magnification ratio about 1.5:1. As a WS (My WorkShop) I have shared another shot, which gives complete presentation of the species.

As Christodoulos Makris (chrimakris) have noticed this is
Lygaeus equestris. This specimen sat on a socle of my garden house and basked in the sun. It was so kind and I managed to take few handheld shots from extremely short distance.

These bugs can reach about 11 to 12 millimeters of length. They have a characteristic red-black drawing, fully developed wings and long, powerful legs. Emielytra have two transverse bands that reach the margin and a round white spot on the membrane. Scutellum is without bristles but with tiny hairs. The black band close to the eye is wider than the same.

This species is very difficult to differentiate from Lygaeus simulans, that has a scutellum with long bristles, antennae with angulous tubercles and a larger red area on the head.

The red-black drawing has a deterrent effect and serves to protect the insect (Mullerian mimicry or Batesian mimicry). By storing the toxic ingredients of their food plants, they are unpalatable to potential predators.

These bugs feed of plant juices, particularly of milkweed (Vincetoxicum hirundinaria), Spring pheasant's eye (Adonis vernalis) and sometimes also on dandelions.

Hi, Alexei
Now that's the way to get maximum DOF - a dedicated macro flash set-up and stop the lens right down. There will be some diffraction softening at this aperture, but it is usually a reasonable trade for depth. Nicely done.
Regards, Nigel.

Hi Alexei,
There I read a review about the Nikon TC20EIII that it will work only with Nikon 70~200mm lens but here I see that you have this so beside the beautiful Macro:Portriat it is another good news, TFS.

Hello Alexei,
A very fine close macro of this Firebug, showing features not normally seen with the naked eye. The details of the head are sharp with even the tiny facets of the small compound eyes visible.
Excellent colours and composition too.
The 2x converter works well with your skilled use.
I like the WS image too.

Hello Alex,
this is a splendid close up of this insect. The details are very well refined. The powdery forms of the head is very exciting to note. What world of insect, if it is very big we would have run away upon looking at the face.
Excellent job and wonderful macro skills you have.

Hello Alex,
An interesting close-up on this colorful bug, which isn't shown so much on TN as its cousin the firebug. We have this species in my country too. Amazing to see it from so close. A fine picture in the WS too. I hope you have still a lot of opportunities to go in your garden and take pictures:-)
Kind regards
