[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
There are many birds of the species in our region and around our countryside gardens. However, it is not so easy to take pictorial pictures of the birds due their high mobility.

Last time I had an opportunity to visit our garden and stood there for days. I have noticed that in the evening many birds like to rest under rays of setting sun. After that, I went for a walk with my granddaughter, camera and powerful flash (SB-900) almost every evening.

Once she saw a nice goldfinch against dark bushes and called me. I could not see the bird immediately among the branches, but she emphatically pointed me it’s. At last I also saw it and took few shots. One of them I am pleased to introduce to you.

European Goldfinch:

The European Goldfinch or Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis), is a small passerine bird in the finch family.

The species is divided into two major groups, each comprising several races. The two groups intergrade at their boundary, so the caniceps group is not recognised as a distinct species despite its readily distinguishable plumage.
Carduelis carduelis carduelis group.
– Carduelis carduelis balcanica.
Southeastern European
Carduelis carduelis brevirostris. Crimea, north Caucasus.
Carduelis carduelis britannica. British Isles.
Carduelis carduelis carduelis. Most of European mainland, Scandinavia.
Carduelis carduelis loudoni. South Caucasus, Iran.
Carduelis carduelis major. Western Siberia.
Carduelis carduelis niediecki. Southwest Asia, northeast Africa.
Carduelis carduelis parva. Atlantic Macaronesic Islands (Canary I., Madeira), Iberia, northwest Africa.
Carduelis carduelis tschusii. Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily.
Carduelis carduelis caniceps group.
Carduelis carduelis caniceps. Southern central Asia.
Carduelis carduelis paropanisi. Afghanistan to western Himalaya and Tien Shan.
Carduelis carduelis subulata. South-central Siberia

The average Goldfinch is 12–13 cm long with a wingspan of 21–25 cm and a weight of 14 to 19 grams. The sexes are broadly similar, with a red face, black and white head, warm brown upperparts, white underparts with buff flanks and breast patches, and black and yellow wings.

On closer inspection male Goldfinches can often be distinguished by a larger, darker red mask that extends just behind the eye. In females, the red face does not reach the eye. The ivory-coloured bill is long and pointed, and the tail is forked. Goldfinches in breeding condition have a white bill, with a greyish or blackish mark at the tip for the rest of the year. Juveniles have a plain head and a greyer back but are unmistakable due to the yellow wing stripe. Birds in central Asia (caniceps group) have a plain grey head behind the red face, lacking the black and white head pattern of European and western Asian birds…

Hello Alexei,
[Sorry for not keeping in touch. We have been travelling, by car, all along the western coast. We are both very tired ... nay ... exhausted.]
We have this bird in Portugal. A lot of folk cage them, specially the males, for their lovely song.
Loved your highly educative notes.
PERFECT presentation.
Most kind regards from,

Hello Alexei

Hello Alexei,
The moral to your story is you need to take your granddaughter with you more often. What a gorgeous bird and shown in a nice side pose. I love the array of colors in it's plumage and it's ivory pink beak. Great capture!!

Another beautiful photo Alex! Very good composition, nice BG and wonderful colours. The sharpness is impressive!

Privet Alexei,
It's a little strange to see this species with washed out colors. But they're standing out so well against the darker background, so don't worry. ;-) Perfect pose, sharpness, and a very spectacular image overall. Bravo! At the same time I wish you & your loved ones a prosperous new year and I hope you return to TN soon.
Best wishes, László from Ireland
