[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This picture has been taken in a hot sunny day. I very seldom saw this butterfly near my country house. It always was in movement, and there was no opportunity to capture it. In that day my wife watered a lawn. To water has flied many insects and birds. This butterfly has arrived also. It long satisfied thirst, motionlessly sitting on the open site of a ground. It explains the color of a background and a pose of the butterfly and posture of its wings.

I believe, that any woman of fashion could envy such fur coat. The remarkable clothes of this butterfly also have drawn my attention.

Scarce Swallowtail
Iphiclides podalirius
Despite its name, the Scarce Swallowtail is one of the commonest butterflies in the Pelion region and Greece.

It is a large distinctive butterfly, with a wingspan of 65 - 80mm (2 1/2 to 3 1/8 in) and creamy white wings, boldly marked with black tiger-like stripes. Its hindwings feature long black tails and are adorned with blue crescents and red spots.

It is continuously on the wing, with no special territory, but it prefers the lowlands and only rarely flies in areas higher than 2,000 m (6,560 ft). Because of its foodplants it frequents orchards and flowery gardens.

Scarce Swallowtail larvae are green, with small red dots and yellow stripes, while pupae are usually green in summer and brown in winter, to match the color of the background.

Larva Food Plants
Hawthorn, Blackthorn and various cultivated fruit trees.

Flight Period
May - September in the south (incl. Greece), early summer everywhere else.

Habitat
Warm, sheltered grassy/scrubby areas, fruit orchards and flowery gardens.

Distribution
A southern species, extending to N. Germany, but very local through most of the region.

Taxonomy
Superkingdom: Eukaryota; Kingdom: Metazoa; Phylum: Arthropoda; Superclass: Hexapoda; Superclass: Hexapoda; Class: Insecta; Subclass: Neoptera; Order: Lepidoptera; Family: Papilionidae; Genus: Iphiclides; Species: podalirius.

In a word....MAGNIFICENT!

Hi Alexei. A wonderful macro. Clear as a bell with good colours. Thanks for showing what is possible. Murray.

Another BEAUTIFUL and SUPER ENLARGED creature.
Good show Alexei.!!!
Your notes too have been done with "meticulas" care.
A lot of detail.
Amazing variety of colours.
A lot of co-ordinated contrasts provided by nature to this insect. Perhaps for camouflage.???
Regards from your friend in Canada.

Just WOW! And I'll use his mascara, too :)
Best wishes

Hi Alexei,
Outstanding close-up shot with immaculate sharpness and clarity. The hairs look amazing and you have controlled the harsh lighting well and exposed perfectly. The mud-puddling activity is presented from close-quarters here and one can feel the intensity on its eyes. Great POV and composition. Kudos.
TFS.
