It is one more inhabitant of Sophievsky park (Uman, Ukraine)
(see another one Swan).

This photo is important for me as first my experience of shooting of black birds (objects) and for restoration of justice concerning of other inhabitants of this park. As I know, it is not simple object for shooting. The shot is made at cloudy weather and very bad illumination, on considerable distance, but in an operative range of powerful flash.

The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) belongs to the Branta genus of geese, which contains species with largely black plumage, distinguishing them from the grey species of the Anser genus.

These birds feed mainly on plant material. When feeding in water, they submerge their heads and necks to reach aquatic plants, sometimes tipping forward like a dabbling duck. Flocks of these birds often feed on leftover cultivated grains in fields, especially during migration or in winter.

During the second year of their lives, Canada Geese find themselves a mate. Most couples stay together all of their lives. If one is killed, the other may find a new mate. The female lays 4-8 eggs and both parents protect the nest while the eggs incubate, but the female spends more time at the nest than the male. During that time, they lose their flight feathers, so that they cannot fly until after their eggs hatch. This period lasts for 25-28 days.

Canada Geese have reached western Europe naturally, as has been proved by ringing recoveries. The birds are of at least the subspecies parvipes, and possibly others. Canada Geese are also found naturally on the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Siberia, eastern China, and throughout Japan...

Ciao Alexei,
bello il ritratto di questa "oca canadese"!
Ottimi dettagli, bravo!

Awesome detail of the droplets on the subject. The composition, POV, clear BG and sharpness are all great.

Hello Alexei,
great portrait shot from a Canadian Goose. Great POV, sharpness, details and very nice colours. Very nice bg and great composition. Thank you for posting.

Hello Alexei,
Like I said previously to an other TN's member, it is funny to see a Canada goose from an other country :-) I have never seen one here in Canada, except those flying high in the sky during migration :-) I think that you succeed very well with this portrait. The colors are good and we can see great details on the bird. I really like its eye, its beak and those brilliant drops of water. This is beautiful and I don't feel the use of flash at all. Well done with interesting notes. Thanks,

Hello Alexei,
This is a fine close-up of the Canada Goose, sharp and well composed.
Here in Sweden they are so successful that they are almost regarded as a pest, certainly a nuisance when they manure Swedish lakeside bathing places to make the bathing rather shitty.
TFS, best wishes, Ivan

Very beautiful image my friend with great sharpness and details of the approach of this wonderful bird.
I like the elected point of view with an ideal bottom, soft and contrasting that enhances the silhouette of the animal.

hello Alexei
you are presenting cute model and nice natural portrait photo. i like its details and exposure. point of view, depth of field, colours, sharpness and note are great

The technicalities involved in taking this shot may be beyond my comprehension, but all that I can say with a degree of elation is that it is a perfect shot, Alexei.
I specially admire the clear delineation of water droplets sticking to the bird after an apparent dive before you took this shot.
Great portrait, my friend, and thanks for sharing it with us.

Superbe photo de cette oie du Canada qui est venu près de chez vous pour être photographiée, vous l’avez bien prise et la photo est bien nette. Thomas

Hello Alexei,

Privet Alexei,
Wonderful portrait.I liked simple BG,POV,clear details, framing and composition a lot.

Hello Alexei

A lovely close portrait of the Canada Goose. You show clear details, but I find the black a little washed out. In my opinion it needs more depth. I have uploaded a workshop. TFS.

Hi Alexei

A very well captured portrait of this goose. I like how you made optimum use of the permissible pixel size. Of course the eye contact provides loads of appeal as well.

A great composition, but (IMHO) a little more space in front of the swan would have been beneficial. The colours are natural and the details are fine (especially highlighting the little droplets of water all over the goose), but a little more sharpening could be considered. The even colour of the OOF BG enhances the bird and the exposure was well controlled and aided by the use of the fill-in flash.

Good work and TFS.

PS. I think Pam's workshop does justice to your photo. The little added contrast and sharpness suits the tone and focus quite well.

Hi Alexei,

Great shot of the Canada Goose, lovely composition and a superb POV, the details are nice and sharp with all the water droplets on the neck and the image stands out really nicely from the Blue Water BG, great colours, like Claudine I like its dark red eye and shiny black beak.

What a beautiful portrait you have here, Alexei!
The side POV is really great adn the eye-contact managed here is excellent.
Also the details are great adn teh DOF impecable, isolating the subject very well from that impressive dark blue BG.
I like all those small drops of water on its head and neck, too.
Very well done!
Bravo and TFS

Hi Alexei,
An excellent portrait on this Canadian Goose. Amazing detail all the way down to the water droplets. Great colors. The blue backround of water shows him perfectly.

Hello Alexei

A beautiful portrait of this goose. The BG is wonderful. The DOF and POV is excellent. The details are clear and sharp.I like the water droplets captured with fine detail.TFS

Hola Alexei,
Veo que trabajas tan bien el tele como el macro, la nitidez es muy buena y la composición para mi gusto, le falta un poco de aire por arriba. Saludos

Hi my dear Alexei ,
very good focus.
good sharp.
thanks for share and for your kind heart.

Hello Alexei,
powerful, highly reduced composition with fine details and subtle hues. The difficult task of showing black surfaces has been perfectly handled by you, also holding the camera with a very sure hand at 1/125 and 280mm focal length.
I think it is a good idea not to increase contrast by postwork too much. Details within the dark areas are clearly well presented the way you show them here, and the feeling of long distance between you and the goose remains - which is perfectly fitting for a wild bird.
Perfect notes, too. Thank you my friend!
Best regards,

Hello Alexei !
Canada goose are one of my favourite birds, and you have captured this one very nicely ! Excellent details, beautiful composition and POV, and a splendid blurred BG, with lovely blue color, which makes the bird stand out nicely. I also like all these tiny droplets of water on the feathers. Very well done !

Hello Alexei,
A fine portrait of the goose!
The model is well framed, and captured with good details and natural colours...
It is hard to read much from that expression, but then I'm no expert on geese..!

Hi, Alexei.
Nice portrait. Well composed, with good exposure. In my mind can be a little bit sharper, perfect sharpness example is following in your portfolio after that. But still a good photo.

magnifique celle-ci aussi, tres bonnes couleurs et détails excellents
bravo et merci

Alexei ,

Anser, Branta... the A,B,_ of geese! Forgive me for being partial to the WaWa!

You may want to know that the original inhabitants in Ontario called the Branta C. the "Wawa"...

It's a lot simpler... Make one wonder abt the place called Pet-a-wawa, eh!

In this close-up I am amazed at the small pearling droplets!
Great b/g for this specimen! No evidence of captivity. Tfs, Jasha

Hello Alexei.
Wonderful head-shot of this Canadian goose. The eye and details are well captured against the silenced blue background. Excellent work and thanks for sharing.
Have a wonderful weekend my friend.
