This is definitely one of the species of Melanargia Meigen:

Kingdom: animals
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Satyridae
Genius: Melanargia Meigen.
Species: ?

There are many species in this Genius. See, for example: Melanargia Meigen or Melanargia.

More info about Melanargia Meigen you can find Here.

I have spent inadmissibly a lot of time in searches of exact ID, however these searches have not given a result. I have absolutely become puzzled in a variety of similar species. However, I am assured that this question will be quickly solved by joint efforts.

In this picture, the pose of the butterfly is not the most expressive, but my attention has been attracted by unusual illumination of the butterfly - back light.

For exact identification of species of this butterfly, I have shared my WS, which presents the same butterfly at more regular lighting.

Thank you for visiting.
____

Our charming couple, experts on butterflies Ulla and Ivan Kruys (Uleko and Argus), have come to conclusion, that this species is Melanargia russiae Esp. As a Russian man, I accept this conclusion willingly.

About Melanargia russiae see:
Melanargia russiae Esp. (Russian)
Melanargia russiae

Ulla and Ivan! Thank you for your knowledge and help.
____

My dear friend Peter Stoeckl (peter_stoeckl ) holds other opinion. He believes, that this butterfly is the Melanargia galathea. I am very grateful to Peter for the valuable information and remarkable comment.

I only can add, that Melanargia russiae meets in Ukraine very seldom. At the same time Melanargia galathea is everywhere widespread in our edges (see: Complete list of Ukrainian butterflies with old IUCN* and national threat status categories.).

I am very satisfied by this discussion. It is very useful and interesting. Many thanks to all my friends.

c'est une peu dommage que ce joli papillon ne joue a cache cache et que l'on ne voit pas tellement sa tête.part contre j'aime beaucoup les motifs sur ces ailes et le BG super coloré et bien flou.

Hello Alexei,
beautiful light penetrating the wings and showing the forewing shadow on the hindwing. Exact focus on the butterfly. Narrow depth of field (f6.3) blurs the flower in the foreground. This together with the smooth background attacts and focuses the view on the butterfly.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Alexei,
This is a superb capture of a species of Marbled White (Melanargia russiae), a form of the Esper's Marbled White.
The details and the composition are first class and so is the through-lighting. The bokeh BG is also very pleasing.

This is another very beautiful macro work from you, my friend!
I saw both of the shots here (this one and the one from the WS) and i can see why you like this one more - the BG is a splendor.
Indeed the DOF is very well managed here and the colors shine more beautifully, but it's a shame we don't see all the body of the butterfly. You are however correct in what you did- if you wanted to show this lovely backlight...it works just fine.
Witherway, the details and textures are splendid and very sharp and the composition is very nice also.

Bravo and TFS

A great example of how back light can enhance the beautiful colors and details of a butterfly wing. I like the composition, the DOF and the neutral background.

Dear Alex,
the rich colours of flower, butterfly, and distant background together with the fine transparency of wings in the backlight of the evening sun make this image of a common butterfly as this Marbled White look really special. Once more, an excellent photograph from you. Congratulations, my dear friend!
The ID: Melanargia galathea (Linnaeus 1758) - rather than M. russiae, which shows another thin black stripe within the cell of forewings. M. galathea is much more likely to be found in Ukraine than M. russiae which - strange enough - is reported from Spain, Southern France, Italy, Macedonia, Transkaukausia, Kasachstan, but seems to have become extinct in other parts of Europe such as Hungary, and the Ukraine.
I like the very well decided shallow depth of field that puts an excellently exclusive focus on the butterfly.
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter

That's perfect, Alexei,
I love the light coming from the back shining through that wonderful wings.
The flower brings colour into the shot, a beautiful arrangement, thanks

Fantástico disparo. Has captado una imagen llena de colorido y vida. Un BG excepcional como todos los tuyos.
Preciosa mariposa.
Saludos y buena semana Alexei.

Belle photo,ce papillon et cette fleurs sont très jolis et les couleurs sont superbes. Amitiés Thomas

Alexei my friend I am not much on butterflies. I really like your backlit version. AND also the eye looking thru spikes of the blossom! ;)

Now here is where it gets interesting for me...
You didn't ID the flower, so I will ask if you know what it is. It strikes me as the flower of the knapweed, aka Centaurea. Your butterfly is Melanargia russiae ... Now it gets interesting for here we also have socalled Russian Knapweed < which is poisonous to horses!!! > aka
Acroptilon repens. SYNONYMS:Turkestan thistle; Centaurea repens L.

Reason I am very interested is that I have this knapweed in my bushfeld...
It attracts bumblebees and butterflies. Most people mistake it for thistles.

Tfs, J.

PS As to the presentation, I prefer it without the OoF part of the second flower. See WS.

Hello Alexei,
Very beautiful butterfly in natural settings. The back light shows wings pattern and markings clearly. A fantastic image to appreciate.

Excellent texture and detail on the butterfly, as well as perfect depth-of-field control with a lovely background. Cheers!

Hi Alexei,
I really love the light here!
You got a magnificent picture with that gorgeous butterfly's wings, displayed with a great illumination, and showing us their gorgeous patterns and colors.
The image is so sharpen, that can be seen in the antennas.
I like a lot the soft and blurred background got.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.

Very impressive! This is an example of a carefully (and smartly!) focused shot. Right on the butterfly, even the flower is in front of the insect.
Excellent technically and very aesthetic image too.

Ricardo

Two excellent images my friend with great sharpness and beautiful composition starting from the low point of view and the correct framing.
Good focus and resultant OOF that it allows the takeoff of the butterfly and their flower of the rest of the scene.
The pleasant illumination offers a very special effect so well enhancing the details of the insect in perfect contrast with the background achieved.
My best regards... Ricardo

Hello Alexei,

I agree with you, even if we don't see correctly the head of the butterfly, the backlight within the wings makes this picture a very interesting one! By using an aperture of 6.3 you were able to have the other wing in focus too. The nice bg enhances also the image...
