On September first 2006 my girlfriend and I visited Andy Cole (Flagman) and together we visited Whipsnade animal park. The weather forecast had been bad and got worse and worse as September first came closer. We were happily surprised that the weather turned out to be fantastic that Friday. Loads of sunshine (I even got sunburned!) and only one little shower. Whipsnade is a fantastic park, with excellent enclosures and loads of different species of animals. We had a blast. After we visited Andy, Sandra and I left for Dartmoor and we stayed there for 2 weeks. It was one of the best holidays we ever had. Expect a lot of pictures in the coming months. :)

The Maras in Whipsnade can freely roam the park.

General info from Wikipedia.org:

The Patagonian Mara lives in Central and Southern Argentina. Maras inhabit arid grasslands and scrub desert. Maras like to live in burrows and will occasionally inhabit burrows that already exist from other animals. See Current Threats below for information on habital loss. It eats grasses and other herbage.

Maras are monogamous and mate for life.

Patagonian Mara young, called pups, are kept in a communal burrow called a creche. As many as 15 pairs of Maras may deposit their young in one creche. Mara pups are well developed and can start grazing within 24 hours of birth. However, they remain in the creche for up to four months where Mothers return several times a day to nurse their young.

Maras usually produce two young per litter and produce three to four litters per year.

In captivity, Maras normally live 5-7 years but have been known to live for up to 10 years.

Hello Pieter!

Very good picture with fantastic, shinning and deforming world eyes. Green BG looks really nice, open composition is also good choice.

I like your note very much. This is what I like in TN most - meeting new people from around the world. By the way - I remember well that you're demo scene member. Dartomoor - I know this place from one demo :-) made probably for first nVidia GeForce.

Hi Pieter,
Very nice shot. impressive colors end beautiful composition.Tfs.

Hi Pieter,
An excellent portrait shot on this Mara. The exposure was spot on here wich rendered beautiful colors and sharp detail. Perfect Green OOF backround shows the Mara very well. Great catch light in the eye makes the shot. Hence the great title!

Hoi Pieter,

Lovely portrair. I love where you have placed him within the frame. Excellent details and POV. Nice BG

Hello Pieter,
Excellent portrait of this beautiful rodent. In Argentina are known as patagonian dare, but is more related with capibaras or cobays.
Deatails, sharpness, colors, light, all superb.Interesting and useful note.
Definitely a good job

Goede informatieve note, Pieter.
Groet, Ruud

Hi, Pieter.
Nice portrait. Very good exposure, sharpness and colors. From eye you can admire landscape.
Nice BG. Jus perfect. Maybe another crop, something like 4:5. A little bit much empty space for my eye.

Hello Pieter, great portrait capture nicely isolated from the bg. Details and composition are excellent. Very good work mf.

P.S. you and your GF sure do a lot of travel!

Hoi Pieter,

Wat een schitterende close up van deze Mara.
Het zijn van zichzelf al heel apart dieren om te zien, maar jij hebt hem prachtig neergezet.
En die reflectie in zijn oog, erg goed, leuk detail!

Groetjes, Nel

Hi Pieter

I'm glad you had a lot of fun and i hope that the sunburn had already passed :)
If only for this shot, it really payed off to go there - it's really great!
Excelletn POrtrait of this cute little fellow:)
I like the POV and the positioning in the frame. Also very nice DOF and natural colors, well managed exposure and impecable sharpness.
Very well done!

Bravo and TFS

What a strange little fellow, looks like a rabbit with short ears. Sounds like you and Sandra had a fantastic holiday after your trip to Whipsnade. You and Alan always get the best photos there!

Have a good weekend, I'm off to the beach in Florida!

Hi Pieter

I have a similar shot (of course) which I will post later probably. I prefer the POV of yours and it is really sharp. Mara's do come out well because the fur complements a sharp lens. I think you have too much space on the left, though! :)

Hello Pieter, good portrait. The detials are very nice and it's a good composition. I wonder if the greens are a little oversaturated?

Well done.

bonjour pieter
je ne connaissait pas cet animal,mais son portrait est tres bien realisé,avec un pelage bien detaillé,et aussi un BG bien flou et clair qui contraste parfaitement avec le sujet;

Hi Pieter

This is a fabulous photo of the Mara and what makes it even more extraordinary is the realisation that it was a ‘free’ roaming animal within the greater confides of the Whipsnade zoo. So it is not as if it were sitting there somewhere in a cage waiting for you to come and photograph it and even if it was it still would have been a stunning photo.

This was great camera work and I just love the composition, the splendid colours, the very sharp details, the exquisite BG, and the perfect exposure. That great big black eye is absolutely remarkable.

Very well done and TFS.

hello Pieter:

what a cute portrait !!!
Well composed, nice DOF and light.
I really liked the green background ....

Remarkably OUTSTANDING work, both, in imagery and consise educative notes.
Very well done.
A lovely presentation, indeed.
