Cupido minimus male.

Another Lycaenid butterfly from yesterday morning's rather cool, overcast weather. I spotted this male Small Blue in the grass and knelt to take his picture. Despite my getting closer, he remained very docile and I was able to move some grass stems out of the way by hand, even though I was very close to him.

Only after I looked at the pictures in detail did I see that he was not actually standing but appears more to be resting on the grass blade with his legs folded alongside his body. It looks as though he is perhaps "asleep"; certainly not fully alert.

Anyone else got pictures of a butterfly in this state? Or able to give more information on butterflies' sleeping habits?

Hand held, fill-in flash.

Thanks for looking. Alan

Very interesting behavior that you captured here, for me this is first time seeing something like this. Well done. But how this fellow balancing on the blade of grass with out using its legs, wonder. tfs.

Hi Alan,
An unusual composition of macro butterfly ..!
Composition, color and detail are very good.
Best wishes,

Good capture of this thiny butterfly. I newer saw a butterfly sleepind in that position but as you say it looks like sleeping.

Hi Alan
Well spotted and a good shot of a tiny species that can be hard to photograph. The background is a little underexposed - but I appreciate how hard it can be to not overexpose the subject when combining flash and macro. Will be hoping to find some blues myself this coming weekend if the forecast stays good!
Kind Regards

Ciao Alan. Nice compo. Good colours and DOF.
