European Robin

The Robin is one of the most popular Birds around, in a Newspaper poll over 40 yrs ago it was voted Britain’s National bird, although that was not made official. Robins are relatively unafraid of Humans especially in the UK; they can often be found hanging around Gardeners in the hope of the odd juicy worm being dug up. A Robin can always be found on Christmas cards too. Robins sing nearly all year round and despite their cute appearance, they are aggressively territorial and are quick to drive away intruders. They will sing at night next to street lights.

Size & Appearance

The Robin is around 12.5 – 14 cm in length with a wingspan of 20 - 22 cm and weighs around 16 – 22g, the Male & Female are identical with a orange breast & face lined with grey, brown upperparts and a whitish/Grey belly, the young are a mottled brown colour and don’t start to get their red feather till 2 – 3 Months

Europe, East to Western Siberia and South to North America

Woods, Parks, Hedgerows and Gardens

Worms, Seeds, Fruit & Insects

The Robins nest in a variety of places from a sheltered crevice to a old rusty watering can, they build there nests from moss, grass, hair and feathers, they have 2 – 3 clutches a year laying around 5 – 6 eggs, the eggs are a smooth & non-glossy and are white or pale blue with reddish spots, and about 20 mm by 15 mm. Incubation is by the female only. The young are fed by both parents.

Robins can normally be heard singing there warbling melody from a watchful perch ans often sounds like like "twiddle-oo, twiddle-eedee, twiddle-oo twiddle". Robins are rarely seen or heard during midsummer (July-August) when they are moulting and become rather retiring. They sing all through the night and are often confused with the Nightingale, this was thought to be because of street lights causing confusion about the time of day but now it is thought to be due to the nosiness of urban life the Robin waits till all is quiet so it can be heard, the alarm call is a loud ticking call which im sure is familiar to us all.

This is a link the Robins song

What can we do

A open fronted nest box is ideal for Robins and wont it be great to have them nest in your garden, also a mealworm is a lovely treat for a Robin.

All my info came from reading Wilkipedia, the RSPB Website and Garden Birds.co

Hello Hilary,.
Another splendid capture of Robin from you! He looks just like a round fluffy ball here - so cute! Great sharpness and lovely colours. Very well composed too!
TFS and cheers, Ulla

Hello Hilary,

What a fine capture!
Your robin has that round, golf ball appearance that I found in robins some weeks ago. The ones I am seeing now seem to be much slimmer!

Lovely details of color and texture with excellent eye contact!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

I got out today with my new lens in the sun and a Robin came about 1m away from me and stayed there watching me for quite a while! I'll pose one of the shots of it later :-)

Hello Hilary,
fantastic picture, great close-up of this cute robin!
I like the pose captured and great details,

This is a nice capture of this colorful robin. The details and the soft background are quite good.
Evelynn : )

This is a great shot. I love Robins and have been trying for years to get a really decent photo of one (haven't succeeded as yet)!

I'd be very proud of this one.

Well done.

Hi Hilary,
Excellent detail & DOF in this frame filling closeup, a nice POV. The color & exposure look about perfect to me, great shot!
By the way, I read your profile before checking your photo. If you're the grand "old" age of 43, what does that make me at 54..A dinosaur!! ;-}
Well done & have a nice weekend,

Hello Hilary,
This is really a 'round robin'! The sharpness, pose, composition and POV are all excellent in this close portrait and combi9ne to make this an excllent image.
Thanks for sharing it and have a good weekend,

If I have said it once,,,,I have said it a hundred times....the robin in Europe is so much prettier and dainty a bird as ours...ours looks as though it is a tank compared to yours and this is a fine capture of it as well...the angle is different and colours true...Very nicely done!
