Hello

Another shot of the Wren, this time it was displaying for a Lady who was sitting in a bush beside me, she seemed to be singing back so I'm sure she was suitably impressed by all his endeavours.

The Wren

Latin name

Troglodytes troglodytes

Family

Wrens (Troglodytidae)

Appearance

A small brown bird with a white bar above the eye and some white flashes on the wings , the wren is tiny bird with only the Goldcrest being smaller in the UK, it is quite rounded with a long fine bill, with long legs and toes, it has very short wings and a narrow tail that it often displayed vertically
Size: 8-12 cm (3-5 in)
Wingspan: 12-16 cm (5-6 in)
Weight: 8-12 g (0.28-0.42 ounces)

Where to see them

Thay can be found all over the UK and have a wide range of habitats, woods, heaths moors, farmland, mostly found in deciduous woods and found least in upland areas, they are regular garden vistors too.

When to see them

All year round.

Diet

Insects and spiders which they search for along the ground or by probing crevices with their long thin beak, they sometimes will take seed from ground feeders.

Breeding & Nesting

A Male Wren will build several nests in walls, trees and banks, they are globe shaped and are constructed from moss, leaves and grass, when a female chooses a nest she will line it with feathers. The eggs are smooth, glossy and white with reddish spots, only the female incubates the eggs, both parents feed the young hatchlings.

Conservation

Severe winters can devastate the Wren population, but due to high reproduction activity they recover quite well, the population is increasing now due to our milder winters.

Cool facts

Wrens will use open fronted nest boxes to nest and to roost, as many as 60 have been recorded roosting in one box.

The Wren has a very loud call for a small bird using a power to weight ratio the Wrens song is 10 x more powerful than a crowing Rooster.

It is actually called a Winter Wren, we just call it a Wren as it is the only member of the family that lives ouside the America’s which have a total of 78 species.

Excellent shot of the wren Hil, captured in a good pose. The DOF is great, the sharpness of the bird and branch is outstanding.

Hi Hill,
Long time no talk :) What a wonderful and unusual capture of this rare and so agreeable bird. I have never seen a Wren doing this... Composition, POV and exposure are just right. The only thing missing IMHO is a little catch light but this is a detail. Well seen! Keep well,

What a great shot of this cute little Wren doing all he can to get a lady :-)
I love watching the funny moves birds do at this time.
I have a pair of Dunnocks in my garden and one of them, them male I suppose, was chasing the female while constantly vibrating his wings and bobbing his head :-)
Great composition, POV, exposure and DOF.
Wow! I never knew how loud a Wren's voice was for it's size either!
