Hi All

Another one of my friend the Robin posing on it favourite branch, will pose in several positions for the price of some seeds, I've asked told him if I get one with the tail cocked up he might get some mealworms.

Thanks for veiwing :o)

European Robin

The Robin is one of the most popular Birds around, in a Newspaper poll over 40 yrs ago it was voted Britain’s National bird, although that was not made official. Robins are relatively unafraid of Humans especially in the UK; they can often be found hanging around Gardeners in the hope of the odd juicy worm being dug up. A Robin can always be found on Christmas cards too. Robins sing nearly all year round and despite their cute appearance, they are aggressively territorial and are quick to drive away intruders. They will sing at night next to street lights.

Size & Appearance

The Robin is around 12.5 – 14 cm in length with a wingspan of 20 - 22 cm and weighs around 16 – 22g, the Male & Female are identical with a orange breast & face lined with grey, brown upperparts and a whitish/Grey belly, the young are a mottled brown colour and don’t start to get their red feather till 2 – 3 Months

Europe, East to Western Siberia and South to North America

Woods, Parks, Hedgerows and Gardens

Worms, Seeds, Fruit & Insects

The Robins nest in a variety of places from a sheltered crevice to a old rusty watering can, they build there nests from moss, grass, hair and feathers, they have 2 – 3 clutches a year laying around 5 – 6 eggs, the eggs are a smooth & non-glossy and are white or pale blue with reddish spots, and about 20 mm by 15 mm. Incubation is by the female only. The young are fed by both parents.

Robins can normally be heard singing there warbling melody from a watchful perch ans often sounds like like "twiddle-oo, twiddle-eedee, twiddle-oo twiddle". Robins are rarely seen or heard during midsummer (July-August) when they are moulting and become rather retiring. They sing all through the night and are often confused with the Nightingale, this was thought to be because of street lights causing confusion about the time of day but now it is thought to be due to the nosiness of urban life the Robin waits till all is quiet so it can be heard, the alarm call is a loud ticking call which im sure is familiar to us all.

This is a link the Robins song

What can we do

A open fronted nest box is ideal for Robins and wont it be great to have them nest in your garden, also a mealworm is a lovely treat for a Robin.

All my info came from reading Wilkipedia, the RSPB Website and Garden Birds.co

Hi Hilary,

Another fine picture of a Robin, you really have mastered this great little bird. Well done on letting the entire bird into focus, which isn't always easy with a head on shot. Great level of detail and nice natural colours.

Hi Hilary,
There is no doubt that this cute fellow is now your friend even with this "severe" eye contact (birds looking directly at the camera always have this severe look IMHO :) This is a sharp capture with natural exposure, colors and beautiful background (I recognize what I knew of England in this old vegetation) TFS,

Hi Hil, Fine shot of this plump robin! His head is so small for it's large belly and it's rather humorous to me. Great POV and pose to see it's charming character. Super sharp detail and colorful composition with the mossy twigs. What a wonderful song it has! Tfs Richard

Hello Hillary,
What a nice looking bird and also full of plummage. Excellent sharpness. TFS ganesh

Well, he's certainly giving you eye-contact, Hilary, so he must be listening to your offers! However, he is so chubby, I doubt that he needs any more food in the immediate future!

You have captured him so well! The light is twinkling in his eyes, his feathers have perfect colours and good texture and he stands out sharply from his b/g. Well done!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
