this is the view south from Greator Rocks, a spiny granite ridge that sticks up from the surrounding moorland and offers great views all round. The two rocky outcrops on the top of the hill on the horizon mark the summit of Haytor at 457 metres high, the start of our route to this spot.
This area of Dartmoor is probably the most visited as it is fairly close to carparks and the A38. All around the fringes of the Moor, the countryside is a mix of lush green ferns and forests such as this, which make it very photogenic. 3 miles north of here, the landscape changes into one of bleak, featureless hills punctuated by fast moving rivers and dramatic rock formations.
It was very hot here, and we made straight for that cave on the left for some shade. However it proved to only be about 3 feet deep so we we forced to search elsewhere.

Usual workflow in PP:

Handheld, shot in RAW, adjusted curves, converted to JPEG, resized and sharpened.

Hi Paul You are getting the best out of your canon 400. the colours and detail in this landscape are first class. the green and blues are so rich. with a very nice POv. well done TFS. good notes too.

When are we going to see the 500mm in use ?

Excellent composition with the strong rocks in the foreground and then the scene leading our eyes all the way around to the right. Nice sharp image with many areas of interest. Well done.

Perfect sharpness, depth of field and exposure. I always enjoy the fore, mid and background planes in your shots. Nice work.

Hi Pail

Great POV and composition. The colours are well saturated and show the vivid greens of upland Britain well. The heather and bracken add nice and typical touches to the shot.

I was on Dartmoor a few weeks back - one of my favourite walks is from Widdecombe - a steep climb from the village but great when you are up - the Old Inn was a brilliant end to the walk, but it has been done up to look 'olde worlde' - stupid really since it was already about 600 years old.

Hi Paul

It looks like you had glorious weather for your Devon trip. I love the POV and the way the rocks frame the scene. Lovely sharp capture and rich colours

hi paul,

you got THE eye to find the right POV!
superbe again!
in one shot you can see everything!

Hi Paul,
A wonderful view again. I like the combination of the rough nature and the spots of cultivation and the fact that real nature is still in control. Your compositions are becomming a very high level standard, where you always seem to find stong leadlines and FG interest. I just like how the lines of the rock all point toward the open field. Wonderful colors and sharpness and spot on exposure as always.

Hi Paul,
Great composition with a nice sense of depth. Excellent color saturation, contrast, exposure, and details seen..
9/10 (sensor spot top edge).
Very nice!

hello paul,
your collection of ladscapes are truly amazing, this shot is also a very fine one, liked the composition and the pov very much, lovely colours,
well done,
tfs & regards

Hi Paul,
Wonderful scene captured with such fine details and lovely colours. The rocks looks awesome and the rich green fields contrasts well with the pristine blue sky. Fantastic setting and ambience. Excellent POV to portray this charming view and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hi Paul.
I really like this image for several reasons. The foreground interest is offset, and still very prominent. And the eye wanders through the rocks like it would if you were actually climbing. And then the eye leads back and into the image further to the beautiful hills in the b/ground. Very well done.
Best regards, Steve.

Hi Paul. Very well composed scene near Dartmoor, a mysterious and rather barren area. We drove near hear between Newton Abbot and Plymouth a few years ago and enjoyed the scenery very muh. Good clarity and cropping. TFS. Murray.
