[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I've not been able to post for a week as I've had a lot of problems to sort out. Last weekend, my normally reliable car (Daewoo Matiz) finally gave up. So this week I've had to sort out buying a new car - bang goes the Sigma 180 mm macro I wanted to get! I have a new Hyundai i10 on order but it will be two months before it is delivered, so until I will find it tricky to get to my best areas for photography :(

I have also been busy sorting out my image library, but I have completed that and I can now spare the time to post again! ;p

So today I would like to present another shot of one of my favourite subjects - the Raft Spider (Dolomedes fimbriatus). This female is guarding her brood of babies, clustered in a ball in the still dewy nursery web behind her. This spider is just about the biggest in the UK, the female has a leg span as wide the House Spider is but more bulky and powerful. They are normally found in grassy bogs and marshes, but can sometimes be encountered in vegetation next to ditches. They can skate on water, and can break the surface tension to dive under for protection or to catch prey - even small fish!

I have also compiled and uploaded a video of this species that you can view here. This shot has been lightly cropped and sharpened.

Kind Regards

Vinny www.vincentblood.com

Hello neighbour,
Usually I'm scared of spiders..but I made the effort to have a look at your video, which is most interesting. Bravo for this shot showing a very protective mother and the video which everybody should have a look at.
Just great!
Kind regards

Hello Vinny,
This is a great macro of a female Raft Spider. I like the POV showing her completely in this almost full-frame capture with fine sharpness and that she is guarding her spiderlings can just be seen in the BG.
Thanks and have a good weekend.
It seems that an economic diesel car seems to be the most climate-wise these days, though I still have my ethanol Ford.

Thanks and have a good weekend,

Hello Vinny,
Although spiders aren't pleasant and a lot of people disgust them but taking shots is very interesting activities. Yours isn't colourful but colours and shape are interesting.
Regards, Pawel

Hi Vincent

Sorry to hear about the car, its an essential photographic accessory that we often forget about.

Great shot of the raft spider. Excellent sharpness, details, DOF and composition.
