|Still trying to get a decent 'bird in flight' photo. I think this is the best yet, but it is still slightly out of focus. Soon the birds will be not using the feeders as much and I will have to try a different approach. (All good fun, mind).|

I'd be using a bigger depth of field rather than a f2.8 you could very easily go up to ISO800 with your 40D which would allow you to use perhaps f7.1 or somewhere about that it'll give you much better scope for focusing error and I think you'll get the image you want.
