[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note

i took this last night on the way home, after a long walk further along the coast with friends in glorious winters sun. I was going to head straight back, but as i drove across the top of the Purbeck Hills the promise of a beautiful sunset was too much to resist so i made a detour to here, Kimmeridge Bay.
As usual, there were plenty of other photographers here with the same idea (it's a popular spot), so i found a quiet patch at the other end of the bay away from the crowds and scouted around for something that would catch my eye. Eventually I settled on this, a thin strip of sand set amongst the rock strata reefs that were exposed by a very low tide.
I faced a bit of a dilemna here, as i really wanted to catch the reflected light in the ripples but knew that as soon as the sun disappeared behind the horizon i would lose the glow on the sand. I left it as late as i could, but i have inevitably sacrificed having a bit of an OE sun in order for a more interesting foreground. Hopefully you don't find it too distracting!

shot in RAW, adjusted levels, a touch of curves, converted to JPEG, reszied and then sharpened.

Thanks for looking..

Hi Paul

Who cares if the sun is slightly OE, it is a stunning image. The light on the FG is just amazing. The shapes are attractive and they draw the eye in. The colours are so vibrant. Perfect DOF and composition as ever

Hi Paul,

This is absolutely stunning. It just oozes quality from the bottom of the picture right to the very the top. The filters are really working for you.

Hi Paul,

Beautiful colours and a good composition,
well done.

Hi Paul

I am unashamedly jealous of you and all the other photographers that can capture a lovely landscape and make it look like some place I would like to be. Somehow my landscapes always tend to come out as exciting as watching grass grow - arousing no interest, attention, curiosity, or stimulation at all. This shot however is full of mood and atmosphere.

With the aperture setting at f/18 you surely took care of the details right through the entire range of the photo. The deep and intense colours give it extra oomph and the composition was smartly considered well before that shot was taken (or so it seem anyway).

Well done and TFS.

Hi Paul!

I saw the thumbnail, I knew who it was... And that's a compliment, because it means that you have a personal style, a fingeprint that is the signature of your great work. This is a very pleasant and well done addition to it.

Kind regards

Hi Paul

Great view of the bay and excellent use of the mud. Great colours too.

Hi Paul!

The mud with the shine on it and so much details is worth the look by itself, it just looks so great (while mud usually doesn't :)! But as always it is worth to look further too, to see this beautiful sunset. TFS!

Hi Paul

This is definitely a treat! Absolutely worth that detour!!!
I can see why this place has so many admirers (photographers): the coast is facing the right direction, the tides are working in their favor, the FGs are always interesting...how can it not? :)

I knew you made the right decision (to sacrifice a bit of the exposure of the sun) even before i read your reply on Nick's question. The golden ripples are far too beautiful to miss and definitely more special than a regular sunset with nice colors in the sky.
I just love the reflections from the sand here and the way it leads the view towards the water and the horizon. The colors and tones you managed to get from otherwise a very simple and flat (in terms of color) element are absolutely magical!!! Brilliant work! If i ever come to England, you have to take me to one of these splendid coasts! ;)

Bravo and TFS

Nice composition paul. I really like the detail and texture of the sand in the foreground, and the warm tones throughout. Personally i like the sun here, it provides contrast and a visually exciting focal point.

hakuna matata - it means no worries

Hello Paul,
very beautiful sunset, very good composition and nice point of view, good sharpness and excellent depth of field, the colors are superb, i love the foreground details.Well done

Hello Paul WOW! this is just amazing your landscapes are awsome. The contrast and colours of the detail in the foreground is phenominal. The colour tones and graduation of colours in the sky beautifull. Composition is superb also. You really get excellent results with this Sigma wide, was thinking about the Sigma 12-24mm for my Full frame 5D although I have the Canon 17-40mm. Rgds Necip

Hi Paul,

Fantastic photo. The sunset is beautiful, the light is really warm and the colours are great. Very nice composition!

WOW. It cant be a photo. ;-) it looks like a painting! Amazing view :-)

Hallo Paul
I am really jealous about the fact that you can walk with friends, just admiring these kinds of sunsets and scenes. The colours and details of this sunset are unbelievably magnificent, and I really cannot see anything disturbing in the photo. Maybe it is because it is so stunning that don’t want to find the disturbance you are mentioning. I am really stunt by this beautiful scene. The different layers of colours in the sky create a tranquil setting, and the round yellow ball on the horison is absolute stunning, and rounds this scene off perfectly. The shine on the water is truly impressive. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards.
