Large Red Damselfly - Pyrrhosoma Nymphula

Pyrrhosoma nymphula is a damselfly (suborder Zygoptera) rather than a true dragonfly (suborder Anisoptera). As is typical of suborder Zygoptera, the insect is slender, its fore- and hind-wings are similar in size and shape, and when the insect is at rest, the wings are held back aligned along the abdomen.

It is the only common red damselfly and it is one of the few damselflies that occurs throughout Britain most damselflies being distinctly southern in distribution.

P. nymphula is generally common in wetland habitats, including marshes, by slow streams, pondsides, canals and peat bogs. Like other dragon- and damselflies, it catches small insects in flight, though it is, itself, prey to larger dragonflies and birds (although its black and red colours should be seen as warning colouration?). Longfield (1949) notes that on the wet heaths of the New Forest it is often caught by Sundew (Drosera).

As with other dragonflies, the larval (nymph) stage is aquatic, a predator amongst vegetation and on the bottom sediments, feeding on various small invertebrates, notably midge larvae.

Have just spent the week camping in Dorset surrounded my heathland and conservation area's just teeming with nature and wildlife.
Was only fitting then that this Damselfly should be 'captured' from a Pub Garden!! Not sure if the booze helped with the taking of this image, but I'll certainly try it next time ;-)

Thanks for taking the time to look (and for all advice given before my 'break').

-I've just been taking at look at this image 'posted' and realise it's quite noisy, some you win .....

Wow Julia, well shown. Excellent macro with great details and colours. Not bad at all for a Pub Damselfly. Good excuse for the noise! Well done, and welcome back.

Details on the eyes are great but the body is a little soft. Good POV & DOF. It's a good macro Julia! TFS!

Great capture of this little beauty, these red damsels have gorgeous colours ;-)
Focus is spot on the near eye. An aperture higher than F-8 would have brought more of the critter within DOF range, but I take it F-8 is the highest your camera can do?

Nice shot Julia,
This is very close. you must have been in the beer garden all afternoon!!!
Great colours and details. Good to see you back.
Thanks for posting

Hello Julia, Very good details of the eye, face and near leg. Love the colors in the eye also..How close were you to this subject Julia? You might've gained more DOF with a different angle than this and brought the whole head in..You know I'm gonna say it, did you use tripod? I like your shot, well done!

Hi Julia.
Good detail of the head and front legs, for this composition you really needed more DoF, or as Howard said change your angle. It doesn't appear too noisy to me.

Everything great Julia but its eyes - its eyes are ultrasuperb! Deep colour and reflections - I love it!

Well done on the this capture and composition.
I guess your Fuji only offers max F9.0 always use it for closeups/macro.

There isn't much you can do. Maybe backing off on the zoom abit to gain DOF, a very good tip by Howard was to have a different angle etc. with experience using the Fuji, the outcome is the same in DOF.
Now, I did find though as I mentioned, back off on the zoom and you'll gain some ground on the DOF with the Fuji and you can apply what Howard said. It's very tight when it comes to macro/closeup. So, pick your focal of interest and go with it. It's a picky little camera and can be very frustrating, I've almost chucked mine a number of times, O how I miss the SLR. :) :) :)

Personally I like the composition, especially as the point of focus is right on the eye....Excellent stuff!

Nice macro, Julia.
Very shallow DOF for compact, it's the macrolens.
I agree with Mike, backing the zoom and the DOF will be better.
Well composed, good details on the head and nice colours.
Well done.

Hi Julia, Very good composition and nice colors. A bit shallow Dof. Is it the full frame, if so Mikes idea about backing the zoom will work with some crop.
Well done.

There is nothing to add to this capture except that I think you have no problems with focussing, exposing or motion blur. They are perfect. Still even at F8 a very shallow DOF for digicams. I have read what Mike said and I think the only thing holding you back here is the limitation of the camera. His suggestion to use less zoom and try a squarer angle would work. Well done, Julia.

Big googley eyes Julia... all the better to see you with! Very nice macro. Good details. Some of the focus is a wee bit soft but it is not a major. Good work. Thanks

Hi Julia, nice colourful close-up. I don't think it is noisy, just a little soft in focus, but in a pub garden with drink it probably looked in focus through beer goggles. Nice composition and good note. Well done.
