[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the first picture i have posted for over a year as i have been ill. I have only recently started taking pictures again.

This is my first picture of the Great Spotted Woodpecker.
This male has only just started visiting our garden and i have only just managed to get a picture of him and as i write this he has just appeared again.

Great Spotted Woodpecker.
( Dendrocopos major )

About blackbird-sized and striking black-and-white. It has a very distinctive bouncing flight and spends most of its time clinging to tree trunks and branches,
often trying to hide on the side away from the observer. Its presence is often announced by its loud call or by its distinctive spring 'drumming' display.
The male has a distinctive red patch on the back of the head and young birds have a red crown.
The Woodpecker is often easy to locate, propped on its tail as it hammers at bark or timber.
Although similar to the Middle Spotted it has less red on its head and more beneath its tail.
It feeds in gardens and scrub as well as mature woodland.
They dig insects and grubs from bark with strong bill. It also eats seeds and berries.
It breeds in both deciduous and conifer woods.

Hi Nicholas.
Glad to see you here and new shots from you. You managed to catch this nice bird at a very attractive pose and surroundings. I have never met woodpecker sitting on the tree branch as this one. Details of the bird are excellent as well as smooth BG. WB is warm a little bit I think. My warm regards and TFS.

Hello Nicholas,
Very nice to see a picture from you again. I hope that your health will allow you to be a regular guest on TN again.
I see that you still have a great love for birds! rather seldom to see this bird perched like this on a branch. Fine face to face.

Nice image with good frontal POV but I feel the focus around the head could have been sharper.

Ciao Nicholas and welcome back! Good colour results for the Woodpecker taken in difficult light. Bit details problems. Thanks to be here again MF!
