Identification
The drake Pintail is perhaps the most handsome of our ducks, the very epitome of grace and elegance. His most distinctive identification feature is the wavy white stripe extending up the side of his otherwise brown neck, but birds with their necks hidden can still be told by their white chests, grey bodies, black and yellow undertails and of course, the long spiky tails. The female Pintail lacks the colourful plumage and the tail spike but are still unmistakably elegant, with slender, almost swan-like necks, small plain heads and long slim grey bills. In flight the Pintail looks distinctively slender thanks mainly to their long necks and long pointed tails. In both male and female, it is the white trailing edge to the speculum which is most conspicuous.

Habitat
Breeds on moorland by lochs and pools, and also in marshes. Winters on estuaries and marshes.

Migration
Many birds winter in western Europe, particularly Britain, Holland, Belgium and France from September-April. In particularly harsh winters many of these birds move further South, especially to the Coto Donana.

Hi Pekka,
What a cute scane!Well caught,framed and composed.I liked exposure,colors and lighting also a lot.
Thanks for posting.

I like the glass like appearance of the water. The birds are well caught and the bolus of a male and a female in one shot for easy comparison.

Hi Pekka,

This pair of Pintails is just wonderful. I love seeing them swimming next to each other. Beautiful lighting and colors - the faces and eyes are magnificent. The little duck's open beak is adorable. Excellent details of the faces and plummage. And the water is amazing!!

Hi Pekka,
this is an attractive capture and the light of the low sun imparts such a beautiful warm glow to the pair of ducks. This capture shows well the difference between the sexes and it is hard to believe sometimes birds that look so different from one another can be the same species.A photo with a great looking light and thank you for sharing it with us. Bob

What a lovely pair of these Pintails swimming together and enjoying life, Pekka.
I can see the pleasure in their postures.
A brilliant shot in which both birds look golden and glorious.
Thanks for sharing the picture and best regards.

Dear Pekka,
I chose an older post of yours to wish you and family a healthy and peaceful New Year.
This i chose for the elegance displayed by the beautiful pintail captured in a beautiful lighting. On reading the accompanying notes, i realised i was right about their features and grace. The tones in the frame created by the light enhances the beauty of this pair gliding away. The space in the right gives a larger dimension to the whole shot.

Both the birds look as if they are smiling. The smooth chocolate brown sheen on the male's head make him even more handsome to look at.The female (as in most species) i realise is less rich in her features but makes herself a suitable pair for her man.Fine PoV and excellent clarity.
Very well done.
TFS & Cheers
Silpa
