[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Female, Red Campion by the field-side, growing in the shade of a Hawthorn Hedgerow.
Its scientific name, Silene Dioica is wonderfully apt. Silene refers to Silenus, the drunken, merry God of the woods in Greek mythology and Dioica, means, "two houses" as the plants are either, male or female. The male has 10 stamens and a non-functiong ovary, while the female has 5 stigmas and a functioning ovary. |
