The king (and queen) of British lepidoptera, Papilio machaon 'britannicus'.

Michael McCarthy from The Independnt, "With the swallowtail, there was no alternative but to trek to the Broads, as this is its remaining home in Britain.

...this is a butterfly now restricted to one area, and if you want to catch sight of Papilio machaon you have to make the journey to Norfolk"(Mcarthy, June 2009).

Dear Treknature users,

I am already planning this year's pilgrimage to Norfolk to photograph the majestic Swallowtail butterflies and am looking to organise a tour with a small group of like minded people.

Over the recent years I've discovered most of the hotspots and not spots. Would anyone be interested in joining up? There'll be plenty of other wildlife opportunities, birds and flowers to photograph but the main goal is the rare and beautiful English Swallowtail.

...Will be hoping to provide special access to a lesser known and non-public area

...Travel arrangements to be discussed. Depending on numbers we may arrange a mini bus so that we all travel as a group

Saturday 5th June and Sunday 6th June

Send me a message if you might be interested in coming along.

Hello Matt,
A fine capture of a pait of P. machaon ssp brittanica in copulo, nicely taken from a perfect POV against the OOF natural BG of the Norfolk fens. Technically this is perfect and the compositionis pleasing.
Appreciate your invitation to Norfolk but I can't make it unfortunately.
Like you I am concerned about our lepidoptera. The Large Blue is threatened in my area by housing developments. The butterfly is protected and collecting it is forbidden but its habitat is not protected!
Thanks and kind regards,

hello MatT

Hi Matt,
A very special picture, both for the technical quality and the fabulous color. Very good background and a sharp focus on the couple of butterflies. I think that a more rectangles composition had better, but that is a matter of taste. Good job. TFS, Jesús
