Seven-spot Ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata)

With a face full of pollen this Ladybird was clambering over the Forsythia bush in our garden earlier today.

Ladybirds are perhaps the most well-known and popular of all British beetles, and the seven-spot ladybird is one of the commonest species. This rounded beetle has bright red wing cases with 7 black spots, although some individuals may have more or fewer spots. The thorax is black with patches of pale yellow at the front corners. The common name of this group of beetles, 'ladybird', was originally given to the seven-spot in honour of the Virgin Mary; the red wing cases symbolising the Virgin's red cloak, with the seven spots representing her seven joys and seven sorrows. The larvae are blackish in colour and are active predators of aphids as are the adults.

Hi Andy!
Great dirty Ladybird! But don't you think it needs a bathroom? ;-))))
Good job!

Good shot, just a bit underexposed. Good sharpness and colours.
Well done.
TFS.

great photo! the sharpness is great, and the colours are very vivid! i like it very much. it is a great close-up. thank you for sharing this beauty.

Very nice composition Andy. The details are sharp and its a pleasing POV. The exposure is a bit low key but relfection on the bug could have posed a problem if you increased the exposure. Very well done.

A very good macro Andy,
Excellent composition, detail, colours and sharpness.

Hi Andy, he looks like he has been up to his neck in it! The adults are known to eat pollen when there is a shortage of aphids. Lovley colours and comoposition, very well done. I'm glad the bugs are back up your way :-)

Very good composition and nice colors. DOF and contrast make the subject stand out.

Hi Andy
Now this is a much nicer customer than your previous post! Lovely yellow and red, and a strong POV, TFS.

I like very much the colours and composition in this one.
The detail is good but maybe you could bring up a bit putting some more light in the insect (only an opinion, as I like this way too) Thanks for posting.

Andy, for quite a long time I've been looking for one of these.

Your capture is excellent. Great and vivid colors, great composition, sharpness and pov.

Red robins and ladybirds are really favorites crittes on TN. I love them. Your ladybird has got class here, perhaps a bit too much make-up :-). Very attractive composition, Andy. Sharp, well exposed and vibrant colors everywhere. It's a plesure for the eyes. Very well done.

This wee Ladybird has been having a Pollen Party! Nice macro Andy. Th colour of the bug looks great against the yellow flower. Nice work. Tack sharp with perfect DoF. Thanks

Fantastic colors, Andy! I love the pollen all over the head; an amazing capture.

Cheers!

Alli
