Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae)

This is a shot I took last summer which I came across in my files the other day.
I spotted it through the window while I was taking some stock photos and dashed outside to try and capture it feeding. I forgot that the camera was in auto mode!
It was early evening and sunlight was still quite strong.
The cameras auto setting gave only F 2.8, so the head of the butterfly is just falling out of range. I liked this shot anyway and this butterfly is undoubtedly one of our most colourful.

Photo cropped.
Minimum USM

The Small Tortoiseshell is common across the whole of Britain and Europe.
Its upperwings are orange-red with black patches and a dark border with blue crescents; underside is a dull brown and camouflaged like tree bark.

Glassy green are eggs laid in clusters on nettles in May and again in July.
Caterpillars are spiny, yellow and black, and scatter to pupate on vegetation or on walls
Adults hibernate over winter in garages, outhouses, cellars and churches, emerging in early spring.

Good capture of this common in Poland butterfly Andy! I like POV and its pose, colours are very good, too. Blue spots on its wings are best.

Halo Andy!
What a wonderful pose and amazing colours!!!
I love this butterfly! Something marvellous.

Belle et intéressante composition photographique pour cette Petite-Tortue. Jolies couleurs et bonne netteté grâce à la profondeur de champ bien adaptée.
Very Well Done !

Andy you always have to most colorful critters. I can see from the exif data that the light was not with you. I don't think you could get more DOF in this instance but if... :) Very nice photo, well done.

Good Morning Andy! A very colorful shot of your tortoiseshell..I hope you don't mind BUT this is a prime example of why auto settings usually do not produce the best results in macro..Your bright BG and dark subject has fooled the camera here..F 2.8 has lost much of the butterfly..But you knew that right! ;-)

Great macro, very nice colours, POV and good sharpness.
Well done.

Very, very nice picture. Superb composition and lovely bright saturated colors. Too bad the focus on the tips of the wings seems slightly soft. Good note! TFS!

This is a beauty Andy. The sharpness and DOF is excellent, combine it with the composition and you have a winner.

Hi Andy, lovely capture. This is a very nice butterfly and you have done it justice. Nice colours and excellent coloutful composition. Very well done.

Great composition and perfect details, very good capture Andy, I like it well done.

So colourful and "cliche" that looks a painting instead of a picture. A very beautiful and artistic work. My eyes are asking for a nice framing urgently :D
Thanks for sharing.
