Drone fly (Eristalis tenax)

A dipterous insect and a mimic resembling the honey bee.

The larvae are called rat-tailed maggots due to their long breathing tubes (1-2 inches) which are attached to the rear. They use these tubes to breath under shallow polluted, nutrient rich water.
The larvae develop through three stages, each stage having a caudal projection or tail. The third stage is about 1 inch long when fully mature.
They are important because they aid in the decomposition process and reduce other flies breeding in these habitats.

Adults are harmless to humans, they do not bite or sting and are not known to carry any disease.

This one with its face full of pollen was captured feeding on the Forget-me-nots in our garden.
Just below it you can see we still have a bit of an aphid problem.
The ladybugs had better start putting in some overtime!

Cropped a little, sharpened USM
