Orange tip Butterfly
(Anthocaris cardamines) (male)

This is the first Orange tip that I’ve found in our garden, we live only ½ mile from the city centre so I was pleased to find it.
It was early evening and it was feeding on these flowers in a shady corner.

This shot shows the clever camouflage of the underwing, the orange and dark patches on the other side of the wing are just showing through.

Photo has been cropped and sharpened USM 70% Radius 0.3 pixels Threshold 2 levels
Reduced brightness -3

Some info…………………………..

Forewing is 20-25 mm. Male has orange wing-tips and green-blotches on underside of hindwing. Female has greyish patches on forewing, and mottled underwings.
Hedgerows, gardens, damp meadows and woodland margins. All Europe, except south-west or east Spain or northern Scandinavia.
Food / Habits
Flies April to June. Larvae eat garlic mustard, lady's smock, but also sweet rocket and honesty in gardens. Overwinters as a pupa.

Hi Andy - amazing sharpness and details in this shot, colours look very natural, background well blurred and very clever handling of the light. Personally I would prefer the butterfly more out of centre but that is a personal matter.

Andy, I'm really impressed about that.

Perfect are sharpness, colors, pov, bg, contrast, dof and composition.

A stunning shot. The flower is beautiful, the butterfly is beautiful.

Congratulations, Andy.

Good macro of one of my favourite butterflies. Even with the wings closed you can make out the orange and its still beautiful with it hidden. Nice to get in the garden!

Well done

Hello Andy, nice shot. I quite like these butterflies but they can be tricky to pin down long wnough for a photo. This is a nice view of the underside. Well done.

Hello Andy,

Sharp details, good POV & DOF, wonderful colors and well exposed. I think you should have cropped some more on the right and should have left some more space on the left compositionwise though. Nothing serious though. TFS!
