Common Green Lacewing – Chrysoperla carnea

Lacewing eggs are laid singly at the end of a long hair like strand which keeps them safe from predators such as ants.It also helps deter them from cannibalising each other as they hatch.

Lacewing larvae have unusual sucking mouthparts, with a pair of extremely long, slender and conspicuous mandibles (or jaws) that curve forward from the front of the head. These mandibles are tubular structures, rather like a pair of hypodermic needles, which are sunk into the victim's body. The larva then sucks out the body fluids of its prey as if through two tiny drinking straws.
Each lacewing larva will devour 200 or more pests or pest eggs a week during their two to three week developmental period.

Adult Lacewings (12-15 mm long) mainly feed on nectar, pollen and honeydew (the sweet liquid secreted by aphids).

This one was photographed in our garden suspended on a plant stem.
I used the diffused flash and exposure compensation was set at -2

Hi Andy,
Not easy to take pictures of lacewings, I already tried and wasn't successful. Amazing golden eye(we call it here Goldauge) and beautiful nervured wings.
Thanks also for your note

Hi Andy,
Nice photo and I like the POV. This lacewing's eye has some interesting colours in it. It captures the attention of the eye(bad pun) but it does.

Hello Andy,
a nice and clear picture of this Chrysoperla. Pretty good sharpness on head, thorax and legs, particularly on the colourful eyes. Appropriate non-disturbing background.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Andy.
I know this insect very well and have some its photos. But I must to say that yours is more better. I like the perfect reproduction of the smallest details and colours of this charming Lacewing. Great exposure and contrast, rich colorful BG and nice composition. Superb done and TFS.

Hello Andy!
Very impressive capture of this green Lacewing.
I like its eye in particular which looks like an orange and green star.
Very good POV, DOF and colours.

bonjour andy

Ricardo

Nice macro Andy of this difficult species to depict.
I like achieved sharpness, the illumination without creating reflections on the wings (the use of the flash is only perceived in the eye), with good DOF and focus, besides getting a very diffuse bottom to stand out the silhouette of the insect and its hanger.
Thank you and best regards... Ricardo

Hello Andy,
You have a better lens on the 350D for macro than me, and the results are super. Exposure, colors, DOF and sharpness are good. Useful note too...
Congratulations my friend and TFS.

Well done Andy.
I like the eye detail, DOF, and colors, very nice.
Well composed, well lit, and well seen from this BG mf..
Have a Great Day!

Hello Andy, this is a very nice shot of a lacewing. I'm always amazed by their eyes. excellent details and exposure. Well done.

Hello Andy,
Lovely shot!
I find them quite difficult to photograph and I don't really have any decent capture of lacewing. This one is very clear, has great details and, what is very important, the eye shows it's beautiful colours really well.
Very good job on this one!

Hi Andy

Very impressive macro work and a stunning capture of this green lacewing. What an impressive multicoloured eye.

The superbly defined details and perfect exposure makes this photo very pleasing on the eye. Everything is well within the scope of the DOF. The colours are splendid and the darkish BG compliments the subject while it is very evenly coloured and well OOF. The composition is great with the insect running through the diagonal.

Well done and TFS.
