Basking

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Herewith a rather more conventional shot of the Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) than the head-on backlit version from a week ago. This male was basking in the periodic sunney periods between bouts of jousting with a rival.
The main foodplants for the larvae are Cock's-foot (Dactylis glomerata), Common Couch (Elytrigia repens), False Brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum) and Yorkshire-fog (Holcus lanatus). More details at http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk.
The picture has been cropped and sharpened in CS3, and shows the upperside markings of the butterfly very clearly.
